i heard rumor that you will feel more recoil and have less accuracy using a 50mm scope, than a 40 mm scope, do to face/cheek position on the gun, from the higher line of sight. True / False? is my chain being yanked?

Yes it's possible...........the stock shape and dimensions have a great deal to do with positioning your head in relation to what ever sighting mechanism you are using and the resulting felt recoil.

Could be because your face is higher up on the stock. I have found the easiest way to deal with recoil from a scope perspective is a scope with lots of eye relief and constant if possible. The best I have found is a Zeiss Conquest, 4 inches but most importantly 4 inches at every magnification.

Well if you think about it the difference in diameter of the two is 10mm. So the difference in mounting height all things being equal is half of that; a whopping 5 milimetres or less than a 1/4 of an inch. I suppose this could impact the stock fit/cheek weld but not a whole lot...

The reason that 50mm scopes often result in more problems with recoil is that they force you to mount the scope higher which often results in a poor cheek fit on the stock. If your cheek is loose on the stock, the stock often slaps you on the cheek which is annoying and becomes painful after several shots.

50 vs 40 vs bull$hit

No it's not true, from a benchrest you're best shooting will come from the best sighting picture you can get. Most often that means high power clear optics and being able to deal with mirrage. Enjoy Bill.

Ugh! There are so many guys who do not understand stock design and how it affects each individual. Stock dimensions, height of comb, trigger length, off set, etc. all come into play with the sight picture for an individual and can affect felt recoil greatly.

It might not affect a person with the scope being 40 or 50 mm, but it could if the stock on the rifle they are using is already at the limit for that persons individual stature. Without seeing the exact rifle with the scope mounted on it and the person shooting it so that you can check stock fit etc............you can't say.

In theory that is true, but the fear of recoil does affect accuracy. If you have been hit with a scope, or if the stock has slapped your cheek causing it to be tender,or if recoil has resulted in a sore shoulder, your accuracy will suffer.

When you do the math your cheek/eye might be 5 mm (about 1/4") higher than usual. Every face is different, and settles on the stock uniquely. I think your chain is being yanked!
