Scopes on rifles with sights…opinions pls.

I am going to be getting a CZ 527 chamber in .223 next month but am really torn between the LUX and the American. I like the LUX’s look and styling more but am afraid I won’t like it scoped as it comes with sights. The American comes with no sights but the styling does not appeal to me as much.

What do you think of scoped rifles with sights on them as well?
Do you think it (the scope) can look good or…?

I know it with “work” just fine; that’s not my concern. Just looking to see what other firearm enthusiasts think before making my decision.

Dont bother me one bit. Personaly most of my rifles are big game rifles and it's nice to have irons as backup. .223 is probably more of a field or range gun i'd guess so maybe the need for irons isn't there as much?? Really just a personal thing you'll have to decide yourself..

I don't think that iron sights detract from the looks of a scoped rifle. In fact, I have a Husqvarna .308 with a Mannlicher stock that I think would look funny without iron sights, even though it is scoped. The CZ 527 Lux looks like it should have iron sights, regardless of whether a scope is mounted or not.

The real reason that many rifles don't come with iron sights is because gunmakers realise that most people won't miss them anyway.

I actually really like shooting iron sights and getting used to where they print on all my guns that have them. I'm starting to come back to more traditional (wood/blued/iron sights) configurations now that I have some solid beaters in the pack. I think that Lux is one fine looking firearm. The American is as well, but unfortunately doesn't have quite the same elegance and character, in my opinion. Good quick-detach rings and a nice piece of glass wouldn't look out of place on one for a minute.

I thought the lux's stock was specifically designed to align the eye lower, inline with the iron sights and the American had a higher comb to properly align the eye with a scope?

put some nice quick detachable rings on it so you can remove the scope and use those iron sights!

This is a great idea, if I do go with the LUX I will go with good detachable rings.

I love shooting with iron sights and am pretty good with them; however, they are very limiting beyond 75 yards or so for small game (for me anyway).

Bingo

Grizz is absolutely correct. The American stock profile is designed for proper sight alignment with a riflescope. The Lux stock profile is designed for the proper sight alignment with the irons. You could still scope the Lux but would likely have to compensate somewhat, or you could install some sort of aftermarket raised comb/ cheekpiece.

I think that most if not all Lux versions also have longer barrels. This could be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on your needs or preferences.

Thanks bassman.....guess I will just have to get both!!!!

Kidding, I wish.

As I will be shooting mostly with a scope it looks like the American is going to be my baby.

Thanks for the quality information; would suck to buy the LUX and be disappointed.

I've never shot a 527, but I own a 452 lux in .22WMR. It wears a bushnell 4x mounted in Leupold medium rings. The stock shape is not an issue for me, the scope lines up nicely without having to fight it. It doesn't require an aftermarket cheekpiece.

Sights/No Sights

I have some rifles scoped that also have iron sites on the barrels. But mostly not. It doesn't bother me. If it comes that way so be it. The trend nowadays is to clean barrels with no iron sites. Makes for a cleaner look, too.

NAA.

FWIW "the problems" I've had with a scope on a sighted rifle is, the back sight gets in the way of the front scope bell and you can see the front sight in the scopes line of view. Both problems can be somewhat alleviated by higher / see through bases, I believe that the closer a scope is mounted to the bore the better. I also fully appreciated the value of having both for insurance sake. To each his own there is no really wrong way but a matter of choice. --- John303.

I have a CZ527 in 223 and bought it with the intention of putting a scope on it anyways. The American is nice to shoot and the guys at the range seem to like to drool over it too so beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. Myself, the Lux stocks look like they have sagged FWIW and I do not like the lines at all. Just looks wrong to me. Have a CZ452 in American too but both rifles are scoped anyways and please my eye with or without iron sights. If they are there I do not really see them either if there is a scope and never had a problem so far with them being there or not either way. My $0.02
