Scopes That Don't Break The Bank

never been a fan of the Shepards. how do you like yours?

I have used two shepard scopes, one borrowed on a friends .308 at the range and another borrowed for a weekend for my 300 win mag.

I was very impressed with the clarity, ease of sight in and enjoyed not having to drag a laser range finder around when the ranges are in the scope.

Same set up works on some military rifle scopes so it works on hunting ones pretty good as well IMHO.

I'm pretty sure someday my 6.5x55 Swede is getting one. :)

Not to knock your Leo mind you as I think that is a pretty slick set up with those preset turrets. :)

Mind you I suspect both of our scopes are outside the price range the OP was talking about.

You can pickup a used Leupold in the mid 200's and get a lifetime warranty as mentioned above. can go wrong with that. I have found Bushnell 3200 and Nikon Prostaff's to be decent less expensive scopes too.

I believe you have 3 options. The cheapest option is to use the scope you have. I shot good scores out to 1000+ yards with a .30/06 sporter loaded with match bullets with a 3-9X40 Bushnell in Weaver mounts. Yes it lacked target turrets. Yes it lacked sufficient elevation adjustment, so I used an aiming target above my impact target. Yes the cross hairs were too thick, so I needed a 4 MOA aiming point. All of these things made me want a good long range scope, so . . .

Option 2 was to purchase a high quality scope in used condition. The good scope brands stand behind their product regardless of how many owners they've had. Leupold has the edge here with a Canadian warranty center.

The third option is to wait until you can afford an appropriate new scope.

Don't waste your money putting a good scope on a good rifle with poor mounts. A cheap scope mounted on a good rifle with good good hardware can shoot, but an expensive scope on a good rifle will only shoot sometimes if the mounts are flimsy.

Millet DMS...1-4
I have two. An older gen. as well as a new one.
Great scope for the money...

i've been quite happy with nikon. i've had a prostaff 3-9 before on my 22-250 and it works great. a week ago i shot a t 450 yards with my .308 topped with a prostaff and got a 3 shot 7 5/8 " group. i was impressed. i didn't expect to do that well. i'm am defineitly not a fan of low end bushnells. they have caused me a lot of grief. ive sent two or three out for warranty replacement.
