Hey guys and girls!

What should a newbi look for in a scope?.

I've shot a few rifles one scope was 5-15-50x and I really liked it, it was like an 800 dollar scope.. not sure of the brand.

ive also shot a x-9-40 not to sure on the price or make, but it wasn't a cheap-o one..

I really like how the 5-15-50 really brought the target in..

I'm looking at the buy and sell forum for scopes.. and their is a wide range.. one day I'd like to shoot 300-500 yards ++ I can tag 200 yards pretty good.. for a newbi..

like, what scope models should I stay away from. the cheap cheap ones? and what ones would make a good beginer scope? ie. not a top of the line scope that will still be good even when I become a better shooter.. seriously guys, I don't want to spend crazy amounts of money right now, I really can't but shooting at distance is superfun! so maybe some imput and disscussion would help me figure out what to do..

I saw these scops.. what do you think?..

these seem super cheap, are they totally crap?

Thanks again,

I have an inexpensive 8-24 scope and it is working out very well. Some cheap ones are garbage but this seems excellent for the money. Movements seem very good although reading the knobs is a bit of an effort. I use it very successfully and regularly for 900m. Send me a message and I will tell you where I got it in ON. Don't want to post web sites here, not allowed.

First decide on the sport you want to play and the distance you will be playing at. Then look at the mag range that will suit your intended use. Do you need to constantly adjust elevation or are you shooting at fixed distances?

do you need to range targets of different sizes or just punching paper?

From your needs, it will be easier to suggest a scope. no one product suits everything. Nowadays you don't need to spend a small fortune to get very useable scopes.

I plan on buying a smaller cal to begin with. a .223, I plan on shooting a lot at the range, (200 yards), and I'd really like to go to the bush to and shoot distances 400yards plus. What kind of range does the .223 get?..

And for shooting 400-600 yards what kind of scope specs should I be looking at? something larger than a 5-16-50 ish? or is that a good scope to get for that distance?

Im attracted to the barska prices.. and the specs..
and i also like this guy..

For target/varmint work I'd recommend a 6-20x 50mm.

Depending on your price range:

The 6mmBR site has an excellent review for scopes.

A .223 with the right twist and bullet will be accuracte to 1000 yards. If you plan to shoot it from 100 to 1000 yards you will need a scope with enough elevation adjustment to do the job.

I am reading this with some interest, as I am looking into scopes as well.

I'm looking to be able to shoot out to 600 + in a service rifle environment.
I've seen what looks to be "decent" scopes from Marstar made by Leapers. Anyone have any comments on these scopes?

I tried one of the Marstar/Leapers 6-24x50 scopes and was disappointed; the point of impact changed by about 3” at 100yds as I varied the magnification. I didn’t have very high expectations because of the low price but this was worse than I expected. I returned the scope to Marstar without any difficulties.

I eventually bought the Mueler Optics Varminator and have been very satisfied with it. The Mueler is more money but it’s well worth it… good value in a low to mid price scope.

You are wise to ask these questions before you buy.

A more expensive scope has better optics and a more reliable (repeatable) adjustment system.

Top quality scopes cost $1,000 and up. For those of us who devote a lot of our life to shooting, the investment makes sense. Besides, quality equipment can be sold at a good price.

Junk is a waste of time money and effort.

The best value I have found in scopes is the Super Sniper. Look for it on this site.

These are well made, have decent optics, good clickers, lots of elevation (60 minutes, I think) and are reasonably priced at $300. An excellent price for a workable 30mm scope. I use 4 of them on F class rifles and have good results. I have both 20X and 16X. Since you are starting at the shorter ranges, 20X would be a good choice.

I am about to buy a Nightforce. It will cost over $1,000. I made the mistake of looking through one at the range. I became engrossed in watching the ### antics of a pair of flies on the 600 yard target….
On the other hand, my AR15 sports a $69 Bushnell. After I zeroed it at 300yards I have not touched the adjustment knob since, so the poor quality adjusters are not an issue. I aim a bit low at 200 and 100 and aim at the top of the frame at 500 yards. Damn near fool proof and a $500 scope would not be much better.
