scopes

Field of view is not affected by objective size. That's a function of magnification and eye relief.

thanks, but I was referring to the range of magnification. I should have been more specific... I like 3-9 for all around hunting, regardless of the size of the objective.

I have more 40mm scopes than 50mm's.. the 50 doesnt seem that big to me, but I don't use anything smaller than a 40 on my centerfires. but as another post said, it has alot to do with the feel, as the scope will sit a bit higher.

Bushnell 3200 3 x 9 x 50

In another thread I asked CGN hunters their thoughts on a good scope for hunting coyotes. I got a number of helpful responses and was going to settle on a 3 x 9. Then I came across a Bushnell promotion that offered their 3200 3 x 9 with a 50 mm objective for $200.00 off. They are asking $329.00. That seemed like a good deal to me but I wasn't sure about the need for a 50 mm objective. Assuming I am not packing the gun all over the place and I am not craning my neck because the mounts had to be mounted overly high- would that be an appropriate choice? Maybe a bit of overkill but at that price, is it worth it not to pass on it? It would go on a Rem 700 SPS.
Fogducker: I hope you don't mind me putting this question here as it seemed related to what you were asking.

I have a 3-9x50 leupold on my model 70 as well and dont find the size a problem in any way. I like that little extra brightness and field of view

If you compare the field of view of the vxii 3x9x40 to that of the vxii 3x9x50,they are identical. The vxi 3x9x40 has the same field of view as the vxi 3x9x50.

I personally would not install a 50mm scope on a hunting rifle, because they must be mounted to high to achieve a proper cheek position on the stock.

maybe I have a tall head or something, but the 50mm on medium high rings fits me perfect. if I had a 40 on there I would probably have it at the same height.

I use Leupold medium rings on my rifles with 40mm to 42 mm scopes, but the 50mm scopes will not clear the barrel with medium rings on my rifles.

I don't know what size the objective lens on my 4x12 Leupold Vari-x II is ....but I like it!
Inside threads on front scope housing reads 43.56 on my digital caliper ....so I'm guessing the lens at 44 .
What is the proper way to measure the lens?
