scoping a BLR

Barring the use of the Leupold or another scope with a one inch objective end the problem is partly that a lot of the newer manufacture scopes seem to have awfully short tubes compared to years past. There is not a lot of leeway for movement of the scope fore and aft to maintain proper eye relief to my mind.

Moving a receiver mounted scope forward will most likely interfere with the takedown (unless you use a compact scope).
I have two piece Weaver mount on my BLR takedown and cannot take it down without removing the rear sight with my 3x9 scope already...

I can see where that would be a problem. In this case the rear sight has already been removed to attach the scout mount to the barrel, so any receiver-mounted scope that clears that forward mount will not interfere with takedown.

This is another reason why I want the picatinny rail, or at least a Weaver rail with extra cross-slots. Look at the photos in the posts above. sk8r's gun has a short scope on it, but the two rings are close enough together to allow not only mounting it easily, but also to move it a bit back and forth to achieve a good position. Kamlooky's gun has the rings in what I consider the perfect position...each one is further forward than either of the rings on sk8r's rifle, the front ring is right up tight against the front edge of the receiver, and the rear ring is also moved forward enough to allow the entire scope to be pushed noticeably forward, increasing eye relief. The only catch is that they aren't QD rings. I want the easy detachability of Weaver-type rings, but located as far forward as the Leupold rings are.

I might be missing something here, but would extension rings not solve this issue? I have extension rings on lots of rifles and in at least one case I have extensions fore and aft.........

Nope, not missing a thing...you're right, extension rings do solve the problem and that's what I'm using now. I just don't like'em! As a matter of fact, this gun uses four extension rings...the scout scope has one extension and one regular ring, the longer regular scope has a pair of extensions, and I have a short straight-tube scope that has one extension and one regular ring as well. You know how it goes...you slowly change things on your gun, one at a time, trying to get it just the way you want it, but the more you change, the more little things you see that bug you and need to be addressed. This gun is set up pretty much as I wanted it, now I'm just fine-tuning it to get all the bugs and warts out.

It's almost perfect. As soon as it is, the next step...is to sell it and start all over again with something else. :)
