Hey guys,

Just recently bought the cz 527 in 7.62x39 that I have been looking for a while now. I am looking to mount a scope to this rifle, it will most likely be a 3-9x4 leupold, nikon, redfield or vortex scope and from what I have been reading it looks like I will be running into some issues with the bolt clearance.

I am trying to avoid having to use the High rings.

Are there there any medium ring options that you guys got to work?

Most of the information out there is from US based forums and most of the time us Canadians don't have the same resources. I have heard of the "Calhoon bolt handles" and am wondering if we have something like that available up north here. Maybe some of you guys have been able to DIY bend the handle with success?

Thanks in advance!

I have two a varmint in .204 and a American in .17 hornet, one has talley Cz med the other Med CZ rings, no problem with any of the scopes, i have mounted, a swarvo Z3 2-12, a 3x9 redfield, a Z5 swarvo 25 power and a VX3 in 14 power, I think the older bolt handle, might have been not quite right, for a large rear bell on a scope, but this is now corrected, an upgrade handle is shown on CZ Canada web sight.
I havn't had a problem, but also tend to palm the action open rather than grip the whole bolt.

Not the easiest task as you already figured out. The (minimum) height of the ring will be defined by the clearance between bolt handle and the scope, from my experience Leupolds tend to have pretty small ocular bells. Compare this diameters between your scopes of choice first. Rings height between manufacturers differ, check the specs - Medium/High/ Extra High are relative terms.

Or you can probably buy a spare bolt handle and machine/weld it until fit.

I have been down this road before my friend, a couple of times. I ended up with Talley rings on my .223 (w/ Bushnell elite) and Warne QD high rings on my 7.62x39 (with Vortex Viper). They are both High rings I believe although the Talleys are slightly lower than the Warne ones. Honestly I dont find that the rings I am using overly high or awkward to use.
The biggest issue will be the size of the Ocular bell and the bolt handle.

Dlask has also had the factory CZ modified bolt handles avaialble, I purchased one from them a while ago.

I can post some pics of my set-ups when I am home if that helps.

I have a CZ 527 and found it difficult to find a pleasing scope mounting solution, as I like the scope as low as possible. I did modify my bolt handle. I used a chainsaw file, and then 'emery cloth' to 400 grit. My quick cold blueing job does not match the original finish. I plan to further modify the bolt handle when I install conetrol rings, as these rings will allow me to lower the scope some more. I have Warne rings at the moment, they were the lowest I could find in Canada but I do not like them. They look to me like more of a tacticool solution! I read somewhere that the bolt handle is available as a part and is inexpensive but can't confirm that.

I ground down the bolt as shown by the poster above, and was able to mount the scope at a reasonable height. You don't need to do any bending or welding as some posters have suggested.

Awesome! Thanks for your input so far guys!

I think I'll try to see if I can get away with the Talley rings first and then look into other options from there. The scope will most likely be a Leupold vx-1 or I might even try the Sightron SIi I have sitting at home first.

I wasn't aware that there is an updated version, I'll have to go and assess mine as I bought the rifle used so I don't really know how old it is. Thanks for the heads up on the handle from Dlask also, looks like it's sold out.

lledwod: that looks pretty damn good to me! Almost gives me confidence to try it myself.

Well it looks like I lucked out!

Looked at the manufacture daye and it reads 14 (2014). Checked at the difference of the new and old bolt handle and sure enough looks like I have the new style on mine!

Thanks to you guys I feel a little easier about this whole thing, I wasn't even aware there was an update to begin with.

Just for reference, this is my bolt:

I started with a high set of rings on my CZ 527 FS, but have since changed to Warne QD mediums with a 4-12X40 Vari-X II. There's enough bolt handle clearance for the Butler Creek Scope caps, and just barely enough clearance for the ocular cover over the rear sight base.

I think the way to confirm the modified bolt handle is to close the bolt and if the handle is nearly flush with the action side it is the new handle. My lefty American made a little while ago came withe the modified handle from the factory. I suspect yours is too. I decided on a Leupold scope with the older eyepiece style. The Leupold 3-9 Ultralite scope is a dandy with a small ocular piece. Mine has an M8 4X Compact now and the CZ rings are really high. I know of a list of rings and will try to find it, includes all CZ models.

Here it is:

You can buy a replacement bolt handle from CZ that will clear your scope and is all nice factory blueing. Anyone know who is doing th Cz warranty now? They are the ones who can get them for aure.
