Good afternoon. I need help finding a suitable scope for my 1895 gs. I was looking at a leupold 1-4x20 but was warned to keep a decent amount of eye relief due to the heavier rounds I'm working on. I love open sights but they may not be possible anymore due to an eye injury. I was thinking of either a shotgun scope or even a scout scope. It will be used for closer quick shots with the odd out to 150-200(deer). I would like to keep it around 300 but will spend what it takes. I will even consider a fiber optic sight if it's a finer sight. thank you. Aaron

I ended up running a Burris IER 2.75 x 20 in Burris Zee rings (low) on a XS rail. I was initially looking at the Leupold, but it didn't have and adjustable eye piece to focus the reticle. It's a bit more magnification than I was planning on, but it works well in the "scout" set up.

Leupolds have plenty eye relief, especially in low power models. The shotgun scopes have thicker reticles so make sure the range and size of target match up with that.

I have a Bushnell 3x9 on mine. Even with heavily recoiling loads it's fine, but you do need to hold on tight and pull it into your shoulder. If you forget that you'll get smacked though :)

I've never been a scout scope fan, but had good results with this setup. My 45-70 sbl, I put the rail, Blackhawk 6 screw rings, and leupold ultralight 2.5x scope on it. It seemed a bit heavy so I drilled some holes in the butt stock and routered a bit out of the forearm. The rifle is exactly 8lbs as you see it. It shoots fine with the weight off it, the 325 leverevolutions are not too bad. I think this scope weighs around 6 ounces, you would be hard pressed to find another scope in this weight that holds up to heavy loads. Carries and points like a dream.
