I just got a Marlin 336, chambered in a 35 REM. I'm thinking of putting a red dot scope on it, maybe a Bushnell trophy...What do you guys think? 150yds is a max. shot.

I'll put a red dot or a scope on it because I'll gain 10 minutes of hunting in the morning and sometimes at least 15 minutes in the evening. Lets just say if legal hunting time is done at 5:10pm, with open sights i can't tell if the deer i'm looking at is a buck or a doe, with a scope or a red dot i can.

I'll second the scope. I've got one on a 30 as well. I have no problems putting optics on a lever. I also have no problem with you putting a red dot on yours. Hell it's your rifle and if you want to put an AR-15 butt stock and have fuzzy dice hanging off the barrel more power to you. But you'll never see battery powered sights on my hunting rifle.

Given those two options I'd stick with the sights it came with ! Plenty good enough for 100-150 hunting big game:cool:

I will add that I also have no prob with a scope on a levergun....my 35 Rem has one on it ! ;)

IMO the nicest setup is a set of one piece Talley rings with a good quality compact Low power scope such as the VXII 1-4x20 or a fixed power 2.5x or ??? etc.

Save the red dots for the mall Ninjas :dancingbanana:

If you've got the cash, a small variable(1-4) scope with an etched recticle and illumination will give you the best of everything....good field of view, some magnification if wanted, and the option to shoot with or without an illumintated recticle.
If the light is low, and you are shooting at a dark target, you won't need to be a mall ninga to appreciate the illuminated recticle!
If you want to prove that you can do it without technology just turn it off and fire away... or mount it with quick release rings and use your iron sights to impress the luddites!

I put a 4 x 33mm Leupold on my 30/30 Marlin with a Weaver base and Burris Z-rings for quick removal . Installed a green firesight front blade and a tang sight set @ 200yds and left the factory rear sights set @ 100 yds for shooting with irons.

I had mine set up with a Japanese-made 1 to 3.5 Tasco. Excellent setup. A 1 to 3 Weaver or 1 to 4 Leupold would be great. I think Burris makes one as well. I was a firm believer in peep sights until I tried this setup. Peeps are still a great option, but not the only option. The scope does affect the balance of the 336 for one-handed carry.

No...:D

I don't like the idea of relying on batteries and I've got a few low power scopes that I like just fine.....but the optics that can be used with or without power seem pretty nice if you've got the cash.

If your vision isn't what it used to be, or you just shoot better with optics, then I don't have a problem with optics on a lever action hunting gun.

I prefer peeps myself on my levers but a small red dot mounted in front of the action would carry pretty well too.

My just picked up my 336 from my gunsmith, he had to drill and tap and install a weaver base, a buddy of mine has a B&L 2x7x32 that will go on my 336, the price is right
