Scoping a Remington 597

Hey CGNr's,

Quick question for those more experienced than me:

is it okay to use the 3/8" scope rails grooved into the receiver or is it better to use the add-on full weaver base rail?
Just planning on mounting an inexpensive .22LR scope like the Tasco 3x9 32mm.

The 3/8 base works fine. Its there for just that purpose, to mount a scope.

Buy a picatinny/Weaver rail and make life simpler.

I used the 3/8" reciever grooves for a few years. I bumped my gun one day and striped the screw on the tip off ring while simultainiously distorting the rail.
I bought a weaver mount ($8) and cheap weaver rings and never looked back.

It's the only "upgrade" I've done to my 597, and only becasue I had a bunch of weaver rings. Using the base was cheaper than buying rimfire rings. I don't know if it's an improvement, as I never used the 3/8" dovetails.

Base n' screws were 12 bucks from my local shop.

If you are after a cheap scope buy a simmons over the tasco or try a cabelas scope.

Thanks for the input guys.

I wasn't sure about the 3/8" rails as they looked so insubstantial, and there wasn't anything in the manual about them either. I actually got the weaver base thinking it was necessary. Guess I'll just get some full size weaver scope rings as well

I let a buddy use my 597 . he striped the screw after the first 2 hrs of hunting...

Wow. I've got a bunch of assorted .22's that still use standard rimfire rings on the integral dovetails, and I've never "bumped" one hard enough to cause that kind of damage.

Simplest would be to attach the rimfire rings to the receiver and call it a day. If you already have the rings, they'll work just fine. I would go the Weaver-base-route, but only because I have a drawerful of assorted Weaver-type rings right now. If you decide to go the Weaver-base route, then you will have a much bigger selection of rings available to you, if that matters.
