Scoping a Ruger #1

I hope this question can be answered here. I have a Ruger #1 that has to have a fairly long eye relief scope because of the location of the rings. I have looked at extension rings but can not find a set low enough. They all seem to be medium or high rings and that doesn't work for me. Hence the need for a long eye relief scope. I know there are numerous sopes on the market but was wondering what other Number One users favor. I even went as far as knocking a 1/2 inch off the stock but I still can't get comfortably closer to a standard scope for a full field of view.

My 243 RSI came with a extra mounting rail that brought the scope back enough. I'll try to dig it out and post a pic.

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. 5" of eye relief. Another good one that I have used in the Leupold VXIII 1.5-5. Both fit my #1's well. I had a #1A 7x57 that had a custom set of rings that were milled onto the rib and then drilled and tapped brought the scope back an inch, that worked well too. Come the think of it, looking at the photo, the Weaver K3 didn't even need the custom extension rings.

Turns out I was on glue. Scope is a Bushnell Trophy. It's the way it came and haven't shot it enough to change it

Looking at the photo tells me you have an extension ring for the back mount. That is my issue. I can't find a LOW extension ring, all being medium or high. Anything other than a low ring doesn't work for me ( have to lift my head up to look through the scope and of course lifting my cheek off the stock). I have to search for my scope picture doing this. Not comfortable at all. That is why I was asking about a long eye relief scope, to avoid this issue. I will check into the Ziess as previously mentioned. Any other suggestions from anyone?

I've got a VXII on a 1A(303), a 3200 on a 1V (22-250) and a VXI on a 1T (375H+H) with no issue. But everybody's heads different.

Any thought on putting on a leather cheek piece? I've never used one, but it might be an idea.

as shown in the pic in post #4, you will see the closet contact point, the pointy tip on the rail, if you go much lower with rings this point will come into contact with your scope bell. You can get brave and grind a little off the tip and dab it up in blue to make more clearance, but if you are one of those folks that can not do that to a Ruger No.1 rifle, you had best look for a longer eye relief scope. As mentioned, the Ruger ext rings do not come in anything lower than med height, and again as mentioned, perhaps a leather cheek pc may help you out. We have cut the butt stocks down on some and more than a 1/2 inch.

My favourite hunting scope is the Leupold 1-4x20...the straight objective tube (no bell) lets it sit low without any interference with the barrel or rib. I have long arms and a long neck, and I find no problem with the eye relief when that scope is mounted in the standard rings. If that doesn't work for you, I would suggest that you look around for a scope designated for shotgun or muzzleloader use. They usually have 4 or 5 inches of eye relief and might do the trick.

IMHO an EER scope, Burris or Leupold, will be mounted too close to acquire a full sight picture, if you use the factory Ruger mounting points. They seem to like 9"-12" of eye relief. When I bought my #1, I decided I wanted the ocular of the 1.5-5X Leupold even with the front of the falling block, and mounted in this way there was no chance of getting tagged, and it kept the loading port obstruction free. My solution was a custom quarter rib inletted for Talley QD rings. Thus mounted, I could only use the bottom half of the scope's magnification, up to 3X, but for shots out to 300 yards this proved sufficient. MY LOP was cut to 13.5" including the recoil pad.

I don't know how deep you are into the Ruger #1 but in line with a comment you made on another thread of being a fan of Ross Seyfried, I have something that may be of interest to you. It's an article titled
The Ruger No.1 Shooting and tuning, by Ross Seyfried.

I had a No.1 in 22-250, that I've since given to my son, that I had a few of the suggestions done by a local gunsmith and it made a significant improvement to the accuracy.

If you're interested, PM me your e-mail address and I'll forward the article on to you.
