Just wondering what combinations the Sako gurus are using and recommend. I'm looking to mount a 40mm objective on a sako 75 .270win using optilocks and like get them close to bbl but also comfortable to look through . If I wanted to mount a short body leupold scope what am I up against for good eye relief there?

Ive seen the bases available in different flavours and I'm just not sure what will work best.

Buy the lowest optilocks you can and it will still clear a 40mm with ease. I however would suggest the optilock ringmounts(low) over the standard optilocks. They are a 1-piece design, with no extra base needed like the standard optilocks. Or look at leupolds, they are lighter and about $100 vs close to $200 for the sako stuff.

Eyeball your scope to see how it will sit on the rifle. The ringmounts have the rear ring at the very back of the rear base, and the front ring in the middle of the front base.

I don't know if this will help ......I have a Sako 85 and got the Sako rings and bases [ x-tra low ] .....I like to get as low to the barrel as posible .....I have a round face and short neck and was hoping to get as good a cheek weld as possible.....it didn't work out very well .....I still find the scope too high ......I am gonna have to get another stock with an adjustable comb to solve the issue ......just my 2 cents worth [ scope is 3x9x42 ]

not sure if you have picked up the rings yet, i just put my scope on my sako with s&k sculptured rings and dovetail bases. very impressed with how well made they are and easy they were to mount. they should easily get your scope lower than the optilocks. Very happy with there customer service, i had them at my door in almost a week flat after placing my order.190.jpg189.jpg

I ended up with a set of Leupold low ring-mounts. I was able to mount a VX2-2-7x33 on there with a great cheek weld and it's nice and low. Eye relief is good up to about 4x but I then have to start creeping in. Thanks again

What is nice about Optiloc (and maybe some others) is the "recoil" pin that engages the notch in the rear Sako dovetail. Assuming that you have zeroed the rifle/scope combination with the rear ring fully forward till it is stopped in the notch .. you can remove the scope & rings/base assy and return it while retaining "zero" or very near "zero".
