Scoping an M14S....Leupold MR/T

Hi all.

I've seen a LOT of information here about what a beast the M14 family is with regards to scope mounts and scopes. Recoil backwards with firing, and then forces moving forwards when the bolt travels back into battery and all.

I've read the VERY helpful sticky regarding scope mounts, and will (sensibly I think) not cheap out on the purchase of a mount.

My question is about scope choice. After looking around (and not wanting to spend the big $$ for a short dot right not), I'm leaning towards a Leupold MR/T. It's a 1.5-5X20mm illuminated reticle scope. Not a full-on tactikewl scope, but that magnification fits nicely into what I consider to be my likely range bracket for using the M14S.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this choice, and about any experiences with the MR/T or other leupold scopes on the M14.

Of course, this may be something of a moot point. A local merchant has told me that he can get me pretty much anything in the Leupold catalog given some time, but I haven't asked him about the MR/T specifically. The fact that Leupold's site only lists the CQ/T as restricted export gives me hope!

Thanks!

W Squared, I myself would say the 1.5 - 5 x 20 is maybe a little on the low end for magnification. I dunno, the gun is easily able to shoot out to 300 or more so, even the 2.5 - 8 x 36 is maybe more versatile. You'll have the option to still shoot low magnification/short range stuff and you can pump it up to 8 if you want to shoot to 300. I went with a 4.5 - 14 x 40 LR/T and that is plenty scope for most shooting. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it! You'll do fine with any Leupold I'm sure, but I'd maybe look at a little more scope! I know most people I speak to regarding their M14's, they eventually want to try shooting out farther so......just a thought. :D

I think Bitterman has given you good advice; consider more scope. I put an armored 3-9x40 on mine and I would really consider that a minimum for general purpose use. Unless you plan on only shooting under 200 yards I'd go for more scope than 1.5-5 for sure.

A couple guys have the Mk4 1.5-5 MRT, however I would seriously look at the new 2.5-8 of the same.

All of these come with the 7.62mm BDC caps.

Another option would be a Trijicon Acog TA01B

I've got an 1.5-5 MRT on mine right now and it works great. No problem hitting the 300 yard gond with it. For precision rifle work maybe you want more but for service rifle and hunting I think it's great.:)

Only problem with Acogs is that you have to get those really low mounts which aren't easy to comeby..
1)Smith Enterprises Acog mount,
2)Trijicon TA70 Acog mount.

You can put any scope u want on an m14 iffn u have the right mount - A.R.M.S or Springfield generation 3 and a couple of other very expensive ones

Yeah...great deal. $1000 for a scope that's already had two owners when I can get the same scope shipped to my door, brand new, taxes in, for $60 less .

Don't get me wrong...I have no doubt that the scope you are selling is in good shape, and the price you're asking is fair compared to what you paid - but people need to understand that as our dollar has risen, the prices that they once paid for US made items are no longer representative of what those items cost right now. I think I saw a guy trying to flog his "almost" NIB ar-180B for $1200 last week...when TSE had them in stock for 900 and change :jerkit:

If you bought something last year and want to flip it now, be prepared for the fact that you're probably going to lose money if the buyer knows the market.

Update: I was right...there IS a guy on the EE that wants to get 1200 plus shipping for his ar-180B.

Anyways...I read this @ 5am and didn't think much of it.
Now I am wondering what makes it o.k to crap on someones EE sale.
Which Store sells them for $800??

I don't feel that I "crapped" on your sale. I didn't attack the quality of the scope, nor did I suggest that you were not a good trader. The whole point of my post was to point out that some sellers of used goods should make an adjustment in their expectations for the price they should get based on the current strength of the Canadian dollar.

What I did do is reply to a pretty transparent attempt to sell your scope for an unrealistic amount in a thread that was seeking information about the wisdom of mounting a specific scope to specific rifle. At no point did I ask where to obtain a Leupold...until you showed up, the discussion was about scope selection.

Please note that you're not the only one mentioned in the post.

As far as "what store", I'm not in the business of advertising for non-CGN sponsoring dealers. Do a bit of research...or simply adjust your price to reflect reality. I can get a brand-new MR/T of exactly the same model delivered, all taxes in, for $926.80

well, i've got 4 m14s, and each one of them wears either a 3x9x32 or a 4-12x40 - the 32 if i want to be able to use the irons, or if the mount doesn't have the tunnel, the 40- the 40 will block or projuect into the tunnel and they're all bushnell- either banners or scopechiefs

Over $800USD even on Ebay. But your right, we can't talk about illegally importing scopes from the US here on CGN.

4x or higher is a must above 200 yards.
I have ACOG TA11E (3.5x) on mine and I can tell you I'd hesitate
taking animals past 200 yrds.

ACOGs are "combat" scopes, for hunting and long range work you need
at least 3-9x.

It is not illegal if the seller has a export permit..I saw an ACOG RCO M4 for sale on the EE & I almost had a heart attack when this guy was asking $1500 for it.

It's funny, ACOG were designed & precalibrated to take out men at up to 800m, an even smaller target?????

I'm not sure what the price on Eb@y is...but I know what some mail-order type retailers have the scope available for.

Right now, "over $800USD" is pretty much the same bloody thing as "over $800 CDN". Which is rather less that "$1000 CDN".

Do you see my point? I don't begrudge anyone the right to sell their goodies. I'm simply telling it like it is with regards to the realities of pricing when the loonie is essentially at par with the US dollar.

I understand that when you bought the scope, it probably would have been hard to get one for less than the $1200 that you initially had it advertised at. It sucks that when you're looking to sell the scope, there are market conditions which make it less valuable than it was when you bought it. It sucks to lose money on something that is "supposed" to hold it's value most of the time.

However, the bottom line is that people will pretty much always purchase new unless there's a financial incentive to purchase used. Buying something that's shiny and brand new is just plain fun. Not that "new-to-me" isn't fun...but it just doesn't have that same cachet to it.

To your credit, you've dropped the price in your EE ad once already, you're including shipping and QRW rings, and you say that you're willing to talk on price. These are all good things. Here's hoping that you'll find a good home for your Leupold, and the new owner will be happy with what he or she pays for it. :)
