I want to scope my M96 in 6.5 Swede...as well as my LE, but I'd rather not drill and tap and keep them original, if possible. I missed out on buying one of the LE scope mounts from Marstar and now they're out of stock. They carry a mount for the M98, but not the M96.

advice? suggestions? thanks!

Try to stay away form the drill & tap method on both...

There are a few non D&T mount & rail outhere, personally I'd get the scout mount for the swede & if you can find one, the Armalon is the champ for your SMLE.

It may be cheaper in the long run to buy a rifle, that has already been drilled and tapped. There certainly are enough of them around.
You don't mention why you want to scope the rifles. Are you thinking of hunting with your full dressed milsurp or just can't make out the sights?

Hunting with the full dress rifle, is OK but not the best experience around. If your eyes are bad or you have an eye dominance problem, then, I can see your plight. It certainly is easier to overcome the dominance or poor eye problem, with a scope.

By scoping the rifle, you lose the "experience" of shooting the issue milsurp.

There are scope mounts out there that don't require drilling and tapping. Just be aware, they do leave marks. I haven't seen one yet that doesn't leave some sort of mark behind.

For the Number 4, contact GAIRLOCHIAN on this site. He makes a no-gunsmithing mount which is solid, works well and just happens to be a THIRD the price of the American one that Marstar is out of.

There is a complete test/range report elsewhere in THIS forum. Check the Index.

I'm not really interested in using the LE for hunting, but the M96 I am, hence the scope. I can't shoot iron sights due to how bad my eyesight is. if the 96 really isn't a good hunting choice (why isn't it though? you can trust me, it's not a pristine milsurp, it's been bubba'd) perhaps I'll just sell it and get myself something in 6.5x55 that's more suitable. I might just sell the LE...it's not even had a box through it and comes with a peep sight by default.

Please do not D&T your SMLE, especially if its a Long branch.

For the M96 get the scout configuration you'll like it, get a 3-4x LER optic.

6.5mm is the sheit!

Go for it. I haven't seen Gairlochian's device. Might be interesting if someone could post a pic or email one to me.

The main problem, with scoping the 96, is that as well as d&t for the bases, you have to bend the bolt to clear the scope. That being said, there is a see through mount available for the 96 that will allow the bent bolt model to work, without alteration.

The Lee Enfield, is also a good hunting choice, much better than many would like to believe. My only concern was taking a $350, full dress milsurp and turning it into a $150 Bubba and on top of that, spending at least $100 to do it. In the case of the Lee Enfield, if it is full wood, put it on the EE and you might be able to trade it for a nice sporter, complete with scope. If it's already cut down, do your best to dress it up suitably for your purposes.
