Scoping out SL-8

I just purchased a used SL-8-5 and I was wondering what optics other SL-8 owners are using on their rifles as well as what rings they are using. I was thinking of moving my ACOG from my AR but it looked too wierd to stay on my SL-8. I especially want to know what rings guys are using on their rifles - it seems to me that you would need high rings to comfortably mount a scope on the rail. As well since my SL-8 is used can somebody tell me what normally comes in a base package - I got two rails (one with sights and a shorter rail), two small picatinny rails by the front, 3 mags, tool, manual, and rifle.

I bought an SL8-4 from Wolverine new, and got one mag, the allen keys and a manual and that's it for 2150.00, so you did pretty good indeed!

I have a crappy tasco on my gun for now, mounting a scope worthy of this gun is going to be tricky. I do not want a low power close quarters combat sight, I want a precision scope with a mil dot reticle and hope to find something in the $700.00 range later this year if possible.

I believe mine are the Weaver bases and rings, and I had the guys over at P&D mount the scope. Any idiot can put a scope on a rifle...but if you pay the guys at P&D to do it, they pull out the stops, true everything up, and by the time they are done your scope is mounted RIGHT and you won't have to touch it again. They are up to their ears in scopes over there and should be able to help you out...and they have the best selection of sport utility rifles in Edmonton to my knowledge. I have the HK G36 carry handle with 3X optical sight on my SL8-4. It may only be 3X, but it just looks right to me!
 
While my Remington 700 is in the shop getting a new barrel, the Leupy 3.5-10X Vari-X III is riding up top. It is a worthy optic.

I had a Tasco Super Sniper scope on it for a while, and it seemed to do quite well also.

The 3200 series Bushnells would be about the minimum I'd consider putting on top....a Holosight just isn't right (look is wrong with an EoTech) and the Elcan is way too high for a good cheek-weld.

Don't scrimp on rings either, eh?

Yeah I am looking for a recommendation for rings... what are guys here using? I am leaning towards TPS rings and maybe a nice Leupy scope - a friend of my mine might be able to hook me up with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 with mildot though...
 
a 3200 would do you fine, although Nightforce and Leupold glass is fantastic. You should be able to use medium rings if the bell is 50mm or less - just slide it foward a bit. Rings, whatever you like, but Leupold PRW's worked well for me.
 
I've got a Bushnell 3200 that came off my Carbon-15. I was hoping to keep the iron sights on, but there wasn't enough clearance (even with the really high rings). It's mounted with just some plain-jane $30 Weaver rings.
 
I have a 20x Super Sniper on my SL8-4 with Burris Extreme Tactical 30 mm rings in the medium 1/2 inch height. The Extreme Tactical rings are GREAT rings for the money, very similar to Badger Ordnace at a fraction of the price. These rings can be a little tough to find as most stores that carry Burris do not seem to carry the tactical rings. I got mine from the Shooting Edge in Calgary:)
 
I've been trying to figure out what to put on my SL-8 for the last year.

I'm still leaning towards the 1.5 x 5 Nightforce. Gives me a bit of range variation.
 
Right now I put the ACOG on top of my SL-8-5 but I want to put a Bushnell Elite on top but I don't know if there are rings high enough to clear the top of the rail... I will put up a pic of my SL-8.
 
Did any of you guys bring your SL8's for varmint hunting...How does it perform against small targets like gophers??? Accuracy wise of course..
 
So opinions! Does the ACOG look good on the SL-8-5 or should it go back on the AR-15 and I should find a real "precision" rifle scope?

If you want a tactical battle rifle...buy one, IMO. The SL8 is a tack driver. To do that, you need a scope that is up to the job. I would go to a higher power variable like a 5-15X with independent parallax.

I can almost get MOA out of mine shooting off the bipod, groups coming in at just a skitch over 2" and 200.

I am looking forward to hunting yodellers after deer season.
