Scorpio EM332A mods - making a silk purse from a sow's ear

Unfortunately, no baseline data for the Scorpio. It's been too cold and windy, for me, to get to the range since I bought the rifle. My goal is consistent sub 1/2" groups at 50m. We'll see how successful I am :)

I'll keep an eye out for it in the EE....:) Thanks for tutorials though much appreciated. If my T1X turns out to be a lemon I have a thread to fall back on...…..keep the info coming and am really looking forward to the results. Not sure if I saw any but do you have any baseline data from firing the gun prior to accurizing? That would be an interesting comparison.

That's a lot of backup rifles, Jerry! They look great.

After some research, I think you have a "cyclone" of scorpios there :)

I have a question regarding the fitting of the picatinny rails; after you flattened the top of the action, did the MDT452 rail slide onto the dovetail without further fitting? Or was the dovetail too wide and needed material removed either from the rail or the dovetail itself? My dovetail is about 0.050" too wide for the rail. Just wondering if this was common, or if I just happen to have a "special" example of quality control.

Joe.

I like that... 'cyclone' of Scorpio's :)

The spares are for other shooters. We decided it was a fun project to pursue. Look forward to seeing if theirs shoots as well as mine.

The MDT rail needs some convincing to fit the groove of the EM332A. I just tapped the rail onto the action and the action 'cuts' the rail to suit. Makes for a nice tight fit and has proven very solid.

You fellows are doing remarkable work on these rifles.

The CZ rails are designed for a flat-top rail. I've never seen the Scorpio rifle, but if it has a round top, rails made for round-top receiver dovetails might fit more straightforwardly without the need to modify the top of the receiver. There are MDT rails as well as other makes that fit other round top rifles such as Anschutz.

Maybe having extra free time is not such a bad thing......

Overtravel adjustment installed. Drill and tap a 6-32 hole for an allen bolt and jam nut. There isn't much creep in my trigger but that can also be adjusted for. Now it breaks cleanly with very little travel. Feels like a quality aftermarket trigger.

If that is the same action as the Norinco NS522 you can use a spring out of a 'ladies hair clip' from the dollar store, makes the trigger very light... also polishing the groove that the spring rides in helps little if it is very rough.

Can definitely work but care needs to be taken to ensure the legs of the spring are long enough for proper contact. Also, confirm there is enough spring tension to keep the sear from dropping when closing the bolt aggressively or bump test.

Forming a better base for riding the rear bag and for a rear grip.

IMG_3137.jpg

Material is scrap 2X4, epoxy steel for adhesive. Then rough shaped using a belt sander and sanding blocks.

IMG_3139.jpg

Will blend using some Bondo.

IMG_3140.jpg

And some sanding

IMG_3142.jpg

A bit more filling and sanding to level, remove the pin holes and low areas but you get the idea....

Then have to figure out an interesting way to colour this stock.

Additional sear spring

This is a follow-up to my earlier trigger spring post for reducing trigger weight on the EM332A. A couple of people sent PMs indicating their triggers would release the sear sometimes when the bolt was run fast. While part of this could be sear to trigger engagement related, as I thought about how the trigger mechanism works, it occurred to me that the reduced spring tension pushing the sear into the bolt cocking piece would also allow this to happen more easily.

I've added an additional spring to apply pressure to the sear, without pressing on the trigger, to address this. The additional upward spring pressure on the sear actually slightly further reduces trigger pull weight. I bent a piece of 0.038" dia. piano wire approximately 2.5" long (began making necessary bends beginning at the sear end, then trimmed excess) as per the picture below. For a stronger spring, a person could try 0.050" dia. wire.

The second picture shows the spring installed in the trigger with the lighter trigger spring I made before - new spring fits underneath the coiled spring. Pull weight is right at 8oz now. Rifle passes drop test from 6". Also passes drop test from 12", however the sudden deceleration as the rifle butt hits the carpeted floor causes the safety to engage as well. Operating the bolt as fast as I can for about five minutes did not result in a single accidental firing-pin drop. Looking forward to hearing how this mod works for you.

Please remember, I am not a gunsmith, I like to tinker - make any modifications to your rifle at your own peril.

Hi Jerry, when are these landing on our shores...?

TC, while not a thumb-hole stock and a similar shape; I don't think they sold well. Too much of a departure from the norm. I don't have one, but I did not mind the look of them.

Was a beautiful sunny day with some moderate gusty winds... and the snow has melted and road dried up.

We got to play with the Scorpios at 334m (367yds) and the rifles shot great. Team mate and me. Ran the same ammo, used the same drop and drift. Accuracy just blew us away given the distance and wind. Tons of fun...

Ejection is incredibly strong for a loaded rd but very weak for the fired case. Been adjusting mine and it ran pretty much without issue today for ejection but the chambering now is stiffer then it was originally. I think I adjusted one extractor a little too much.... maybe I can go backwards???

Mags needed the lips adjusted slightly and feeding did get better... more trial and error me thinks.

Will keep pushing it out further as my areas dry up.... ideally, I can get some positive results at 500m... then out towards 740yds. That will take a fair amount of kentucky holdover me thinks...

Another fun day plinking to 334m in gusty winds

A rifle like this shouldn't be this accurate.... Looks like I have sorted out the ejection issues on my rifle (pretty close anyways)... 2 more to sort out. As the snow melts, will keep pushing them out further.

Team mate getting ready for the season. Hopefully, the matches in the summer will still be on

Colour and graphics are next.

All 3 shot really well in the high winds yesterday. 334m were not a problem Ejection still plauges a couple of rifles but hoping to fix shortly.
