Anyone like this configuration for their M14? It seems everyone here like to mount their scope on the receiver. I've been leaning towards a forward mount lately because I do want to use the stripper clips for loading in IPSC matches. It seems that target acquisition is much faster in the forwards mount set up too. So if you have used it on an M14, I would really like to know your experience and opinion. Thanks for letting me bounce of ideas on you guys.:)

I LOVE the M1A/M14S configured as a scout with some sort of aimpoint...I have several configured this way and shoot them far more often than all my other guns combined. My current darling is a norinco rigged up with a Rooster33 scout mount and an Aimpoint ML2 2x:

Target was shot at a distance of 200 meters. The rooster mount is too small for mounting a long eye relief scope (like the Leupold Scout); you would need to find a springfield scout mount for this type of application. I initially though that loading form stripper clips would be the way to go as well, but found that too much force was required to reliably load this way. Still, I am a scout convert...:)

Good luck!

Nice set-up Brobee. I guess I'll find out this week when my rifle arrives on the difficulties of stripper clip loading. What about two mounts of the rooter 33 to accommodate a Leupold? I will hopefully be a scout convert soon too.

Thanks, Tön

Is the above mount (pictures of rifle with Aimpoint) the one available from Marstar?

If not how does this mount work? Is it as bad as the others they sell?

Jeff

The mount is not from marstar, rather a rooster33 mount. I only have experience with the Rooster33 and Springfield scout mounts...as such I can't comment on the Marstar scout mount. I quite like the Rooster33 mount, but don't think it would work too well set two one infront of the other. The reason for this is that there is a slight taper to the barrel profile and I believe it would be quite difficult to get the surfaces of the two mounts parallel. The rooster mount works well on either a springfield or a norinco barrel (norinco barrel is of slightly lesser id).

Vortex is awesome except for two things: it rings like a bell every time it is nicked and it catches all kinds of grass/twigs when stalking through the bush. As a flash hider it rocks.

I have a Springfiled Scout Mount with an Eotech on my Norc M14 and I love it. Very quick, very accurate and has held zero for over 350 rounds so far.

Worked great during deer season and I'm planning on running it on a couple of tac carbine courses. (Oh, and no, I did not run the light on the gun during deer season.... kinda unlawful to do that in Ont.)

Oh yeah, I forgot that little lesson from Vietnam. Wasn't that the problem with the original M16 flash hider too?

I have a springfeild scout mount on my Norinco with an Aimpoint ML2. I used to have it on a R33 mount but wanted to put it a little more to the rear. The Aimpoint sits in a nice low ring and is super fast to get on target.

Hey Tritium:

Nice rig. I like how you slapped that sling plate on the portside to allow the single point connection.

Heeerre kitty, kitty, kitty....

Two questions:
1.) where can one buy the rooster or SA mounts discussed.

2.) What if anything is done to the handguard when using these fwd mounts? Do they come with a special cutout handguard?

P.S. Brobee, love the bedliner finish! I am copying that idea as soon as I find a reasonably priced fibre stock!

Hungry,

Thank you sir! I'm a huge fan of single point slings.

By the way, you inspired alot of my ideas for this rifle... and, thanks to your advice, I have one full length with ARMS 18 mount Swan rings and a Burris 3X9 on it and this one! I love 'em both!:)

One thing you might want to check, is the availability
of riflescopes for a Scout style mount.

I have an M1A Scout. There is only one scope from
Leupold with IER(Intermediate Eye Relief) suitable for
this rifle. I suspect other scope manufacturers are
also limited in what they offer.

A Scout scope is very fast on target acquisition,
especially if you aim with both eyes open. I myself am
satisfied with my Scout model, but it might not be for
everyone.

The springfield mount looks good. The price ain't that bad either. So let me get this straight, it will work fine on a regular Norinco barrel?

I know you said you cannot mount scout scope, but if you ever do so...my advice is to avoid the Burris and get a Leupold.
I have never had problems with my 308 Tanker copy using the Leupold 2.5 power scout scope.
Not so with two other optical brands.

Very nice M1A shorty....

Does someone have a pic with a Leupold on it? It seems that most of the scouts I've seen have either an Aimpoint or a reflex sight on scout mount. These seem like short range sights for a rifle that can do well very far. Could it be the shortcoming of the intermediate eye relief distance?

Which begs the question, what is the farthest accurate shot you've done with a scout mounted scope?

Does anyone carry the SA scout scope mount in Canada? Can it be ordered from the U.S.?

ALso, what's the going rate on the 2.5 Leupold Scout scope?
