I just took delivery of a sweet Kreiger barrelled shorty. I had my heart set on a scout setup, but it's a medium contour barrel so the standard SA and M14.ca scout mounts don't fit. Of course, I never even thought of that glich. Anyone have some experience or ideas to help this dumb-azz figure out a scout mount? :p

Have a smith drill and tap the barrel and contour and drill a section of rail to suit your needs. Easy peasy as they say. I've had it done a few times now on medium profile barrels. I think I got the idea from some of Warbird custom's work I've seen pics of. No sense spending good money on bulky weight of a full length metal handguard when a light weight solution is 4 little threaded holes and a piece of 1.1" bottom radiused picatinny rail in your length of choice. ;)
The barrel should mic out around 1.1" diameter right to the oprod guide taper so gives a very nice straight mounting surface. The diameter is also more than sufficient to afford the drilling and tapping to suitable depth. A true custom approach and one I wouldn't hesitate to go with.

You might be able to make an Ultimak M8 front rail fit as well .
On the factory 18.5 in Norincos some material has to be removed from the Ultimak as the barrel profile is thicker where it attaches .

Unfortunately, the rifle I sold him has a krieger medium pipe on it.
I would do the drill and tap, simplest, cleanest and super solid.... And no extra weight of a full handguard. Most smiths charge 25.00 a hole for drill and tap, so 100 bucks plus a piece of matching rail... Should be able to get it done for less than ANY of the handguard alternatives.
