Scout Rifle Fail?

So i started a journey to create a scout rifle for myself and thought that I was being very clever and modern by choosing a Bergara rifle in 308 with a lightweight carbon barrel. Then I picked up a scout scope and headed down to my local gunsmith to have it mounted up. Imagine my surprise when I was told that forward mounting setups drill ad tap the barrel itself and you cannot do that with a carbon fibre barrel. :(

Does anyone know of a lightweight stock option that would fit a Rem 700 action which would allow me to get around this? Or perhaps some other mounting option that would work? I would really love to use this action and barrel for my scout.

Open to any good options or suggestions to recover this project.

You want some kind of rail extension like the one above. Skinner makes 12” continuous top rails with integrated iron sights but I think they have to be drilled and tapped into the barrel still. I wouldn’t trust anything attached to the stock, since it is free floated and will flex a bit in relation to the barrel.

I suggest forgetting about the scout scope and just using an LPVO, preferably one with a red dot option. Like this

Does the mdt carbon chassis have the forward nightvision bridge like the some others? Mount the scope on the bridge would get it down further.
Or find a stock stiff enough to make a bridge that spans over the carbon barrel

Maybe exchange it if never ring mounted. I’ve found retailers may be happier if you come back looking for a more expensive model.

I run a PST*2 1-6 on similar rig that been just a loyal piece of kit.
 
Nearest i can think is a mdt lss gen3 or ess with full length railed handguard.

Not sure it it meets requirements of lightweight compared to a Tupperware stock, but at least you will get to check off the removable magazine box in the scout rifle checklist.

Yea. The more I look around the more I think the LPVO crowd has it right.

I will see if the retailer will allow me to upgrade to a more expensive model since I have not tried to mount it and it is basically new in the box only brought out for these pictures :)

Definitely heavier, especially the ESS. LSS Gen 3 would be somewhat heavier.

Honestly, if I were OP and going for a scout rifle, I'd sell that one (or return it) and go back to the drawing board. The rifle is worth a pretty penny, plus the gunsmithing he was gonna pay. He could buy a new Ruger American Scout, get a detachable mag, full rail, a 60 degree bolt throw, and have money left over. Or for similar money, a used Steyr Scout.

A long relief "Scout Scope" is an innovation to allow the use of stripper clips for reloading. Your rifle has no such provision so a traditional scope makes more sense. A "Scout Rifle" would also have iron sights and a provision to use them as backup sights; again, your rifle is not equipped. Why not put a conventional scope on it and call it what it is, a handy, light and very versitile carbine?

I find my Leupold 2.5x IER in low QD rings very fast to acquire with both eyes open. Faster than my 1x6 and 1x8 LPVOs. It's shotgun like.

It's lighter weight than most LPVOs.

I suspect that it is tougher than most LPVOs.

Only if you can utilize stripper clips. Not much else going for them. (I had one on a Swedish M38 short rifle with a BadAce no drill mount. ( a true scout), accurate enough, but I put the original iron back on, and am much happier.
