Scout rifle project

While ago I decided to start a new project that will be loosely basing on the scout rifle concept introduced by Col. Jeff Cooper in the 80's.
I'll be using different caliber than .308, the barrel will be longer and the whole package will be heavier than suggested by the author, so it's not going to be the scout, but fairly close.
Yet I hope to have the rifle that is easy to shoot and carry, and would be capable of hitting man-sized targets out to 450 meters without scopes.
That's the goal. Over the next couple of months I'll post the updates about the project and would like to invite anyone who's interested to share his own experience. Help me to keep the topic alive for a while.
So, here it's: the base for my build - 1942 Husqvarna Mauser model M38 in 6.5x55 that was sporterized many moons ago and spent the last 14 years sitting in the safe of its owner near Kelowna.

Nice and clean receiver that wasn't drilled, smooth bolt operation and capability of feeding via stripper clips are all desirable features in my humble opinion.

I'm planning to install a single weaver base at the rear of the receiver and use the XS high weaver base backup ghost ring sight.
After cutting down and installing the new barrel I'll decide exactly what kind of front sight should I go with. I have some ideas already. I'm also planning to go with the XS scout scope rail.

That's a good way to go a lot of people pass by the Weaver base peeps and hunt down some direct mount receiver sight with some obscure hole spacing. This way the you don't have to worry about plugging and looking at some ugly holes if for whatever reason you want to remove the sight, just pop it off the base leave the base where it is, it looks the part.

I had an XS Weaver base sight mounted on a short barreled 338 I had to go with a very high front sight so high it was always hooking on something , my preference now is the Williams receiver sight I have one on a short barreled 98 and had one on a BLR I also like the adjustment on the Williams. I do like the XS on Marlins.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing. What kind of sight from Williams are you using?
They all look fragile and that was my biggest issue, but I have no personal experience with them.

I put together a scout on a M-96 about 10 years ago, I used the original barrel and mounted a weaver base made for T/C Contender works really well just doesn't quite make "scout" weight.

I think I have the WGRS Williams, it is the model listed for FN Mauser with 1/2" spacing on rear base holes, I agree the Williams do not seem as durable as the XS or the Skinner although I have not broken one yet, I see XS does make a sight set for Mausers it is over a $100 for the set and I prefer the front sight to be a Firesight, I also have a Skinner rear on a Rossi 45 70 with a Firesight front, I have found the Williams easiest to adjust next being the XS and last being the Skinner. NECG also makes a sight for Weaver bases but I haven't used or seen one. I just shot my Parker Hale Safari with a Williams rear receiver sight and a Firesight front today and I was very pleased.
