Scout rifle; what and why?

If the sun is behind you at the right angle you can sometimes get glare on the eyepiece that makes it difficult to look thought the scope.

Ruger makes a nice scout rifle called the Frontier. It's a little on the heavy side, but I love mine in 7mm-08. I've got a 4x Leupold EER scope on it and it takes deer every year. The scout scope mount is great for fast shooting.

Actually, there is no "rule" about not having a semi scout rifle. Jeff Cooper specifically mentions this in his writing; he just said that having a semi would probably bring your rifle over his weight limit for a scout. I didn't mention it when I started this post, but I actually had an M14 SOCOM in mind when I was thinking scout rifle. I think if you got your l gunsmith to convert your M14 to a SOCOM and lighten it up as much as possible (ie - get rid if the flash hider, no bipods etc) you'd have an excellent scout. Even the weight thing is really a matter of preference.

Whatever happened to the factory Savage scout rifle, the 10FCM? It was tested in Guns magazine back in 2001. This was built to be a scout rifle with the scope mount on the barrel for a LER scope, and tested very well. This would save a lot of trouble having a rifle modified to become a "scout" rifle.
I have also seen a few model 94's that had barrel mounted scopes which makes, in my opinion, the perfect scout rifle for balance and speed shooting.

Hey that's really nice buckbrush, I like it, :) I would not put a scope like that on mine though, and I would still consider it a 'scout' rifle even though it did not have the scope. (but if you stick with the Jeff Cooper definition of one, I guess it would not really be a scout rifle) :( Regards FT.

You are correct!

"Scout Rifle" is a concept with suggested guidelines and parameters that are variable.
As far as I know, there can be no 100% definitive Scout Rifle.

If you check out this article http://home.netcom.com/~chingesh/scoutrifle.html, listed earlier by someone else, you will see that in Jeff Cooper's own writing, semis are not ruled out. What you posted was Steyr Mannlicher's own version of Mr Cooper's writing, and they did change it to suit. Cooper had no specified actions for his rifles, he just found bolts to be considerably lighter than semis, and stated that until someone made a light semi, bolts would probably be the way to go...
 
I've read my share of Col. Cooper, one reason he origionaly wanted a bolt action is so the rifleman must aim at his target, instead of rapid firing or spray and pray, that is the job of the Squad Machinegunner. Cooper was very dissastisfied with the current marksmenship levels in the Forces, and the current trend in all armys to equip soldiers with rapids to simply put rounds down range, phillisophically speaking he wanted to return to the soldier as rifleman, pick your target quickly, kill him with one shot, and continue....and bolt actions are generally easier to field maintain, lighter, he aslo favoured the .308 beacause the 30-06 is bigger than you need and the .223 is too small, heck if someone dissagrees just read Coopers books.

A friend of mine has squeezed a .44 Ruger Deerfield carbine into a polymer folding 10/22 stock, its a fun little gun. This is the start point I would like to replicate if it can produce decent accuracy. I see the folder only being useful for reducing size for backpacking or the truck, a nice lightweight glass or polymer fixed stock would be just as nice. For the scope I am thinking of a Dr Optic red dot.
 
Real Jeff Cooper Scout

Here is mine

Minty rem 600 .308, ditched the s**tty wood and got a HS Precision for it, 2.5 leupy IER, hey just like the Coop ordered:D
