"Scout" scope for milsurp

My eyes are not getting any better with age. I can see quite well at a distance without glasses, but the rear sights on most milsurps are a bit fuzzy. I recently bought a BadAce mount for one of my Swede 96's and would like advice on a Leupold Scout scope. The eye relief seems to be around 9". The Swede sight mounts quite a ways forward. Is this scope a reasonable one to put on? I am not into real fussy bullseye shooting, mostly gong at 100 yds, plus maybe some actual target shooting.

Which Leupold model are you looking at? I used to have the vx-3 2.5-8x32mm (handgun) on my mosin but it has closer to 15" eye relief. It worked well in the scout setup though, but was probably a little too expensive for the setup...

I have experience with Nikon Force XR 2.5-8x28 EER on k98k.

The higher the magnification the smaller the eye relief and eye box, (laws of physics).

I think it's also affected by shooter's eyesight. For me it has an absolutely gorgeous clean sight picture at x2.5 and stops being useful at x6.
 
I second the Vortex 2-7x. I've got one on a Mosin M38 and it has worked well for a year now. Probably 200rds fired with it on so far. I can hit 8"" steel plate at 200yds with it fairly consistently. My eyes were born in the first half of the last century.

I found the Werne Rings the simplest rings to mount so far, next to that I would rank Leopold then Burris from what is generally available at the stores. the Vortex 2-7 is a nice scope I have one on a CZ 527. My only issue so far with it was that it fogged up last year during the Rainy Deer season in WMU 56.... it was warm and rained all week. I could still see through it but there was some condensation all the same. I will have a all weather iron sighted scout variant as an option this year just for that reason.

I fully agree on the high scope rings being difficult to mount on a K98.... I used a bad ace mount on mine and despite the mount being to spec holy moley I played and eventually made a type of lapping tool out of an old broom handle and sandpaper which worked like a charm and has held accurate since but wow did I spend and prolonged period of time fitting those high Leopold rings.

Yes they are Leupold QD rings,they are very solid. I have not taken the scope off and put it back on yet,will do that soon to see if it holds zero. I have the same rings on a few other rifles and they do seem to hold zero on them,we will see.
