Scout Scope on a Mini-30

Anyone here mounted a Scout scope on a Mini-30 (or Mini_14)? Or is this just a terrible idea?

I see the Scout specific mounting rails available in the US, but of course not here in Canada.

Conventional mount works just fine, not sure why anyone would scout mount unless there was no other way.
I have a VX3 1.5-5, heavy duplex and works great..
 
I tried it for a while because the empty brass was hitting my scope rings upon ejection. I put the mini 14 in an aftermarket stock with a picatinny rail and mounted a Leopold Scout on it. It worked ok but in the end I went back to the more conventional setup.

Older or newer mini? The new ones are super easy to scope as they have the Ruger integrated mounts. You can order an Ultimak rail from Brownells without issues.
 
I don't know how you would go about mounting a scout scope with the Mini-14's plastic handguard in the way. Can it be conveniently removed? I tend to agree that a conventional low powered variable is a better solution to the problem when a magnified sight picture is advantageous, and today, the red dot has pretty much taken over what the scout scope was purported to do back in the '80s.

The factory plastic handguard is simply clipped on the barrel. You need an aftermarket aluminum rail like the Ultimak or Amega that boots on for a scout set up.

It’s a new Mini 30. For some reason I thought Brownells didn’t ship to Canada. That is great to hear that I can get the rail there. Thanks!

You can order a lot of stuff throug Brownells without issues. That’s where I got my Ultimak. For a regular scope, as mentioned previously, the Ruger rings mount directly to the receiver. The newer Mini’s were also shipped with a picatinny rail that screws to the receiver. Lots of options to mount optics on the Mini.
