HI all,

I have been thinking of scoping my Marlin 45-70 but I can't decide between a scout scope or a regular low magnification one. I tried a low qlty fixed 4X on it but it's not the best thing so I need something better.

For a reg scope, I was thinking of putting a Elite 3200 1.5x4.5x32 or a Leupold VX-1 2x7x33 or a Weaver Classic V Series 2x7x32 or simply go with a scout scope like the Bushnell Trophy 2x6x32 or a Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm Scout Rifle Scope. I will have a $300 budget, so with the Leupold, I am already over but I could manage maybe $350 in all :D .

Can anyone let me know their comment on scout scopes and how is it to aquire the target? Am I better with a "regular" scope or is it worth it in hunting situation?

Now, the eye releif on these scout scope ir 9" for Leupold and 9-26" for the Bushnell. I am not sure if 9-26 means focus between 9" and 26" and for handgun it's something like 20" if I am right  lol, now that I wrote that, I am more confused, for the leupold is says 9" so that's clear.

Another option would be a set of Ghost ring and leave it like that.

Let me know your comments ;)

I have a 1-4X20 Leupold on mine and actually like it allot. I hated the idea at first, but after using it for a while I have grown to like it.

PM me if interested, I have a Leupold one piece base and rings that I will sell for a good price.

Scoping a lever should get you a case of the itch. Total blasphemy.

Yah, I know but imagine her painted camo with a camo scout scope and rings, wouaouw lol, she would sure look good :D and I totally understand your point, it's a nice lever gun as is  .

I am still debating if I should put a scout scope or decent sights because the factory ones, they pretty much suck, maybe it's just me but I find that it's hard to aim with them  .

After looking and looking again for ghost rings and peep receiver sight, I am not sure if a Lyman or Williams aperture sight would be better then Ghost rings for target shooting and hunting. I suspect the ghost rings would be faster to aquire target for hunting but not as accurate for target shooting  , what's you guys experience with them?

Thanks

Ghostrings arent any faster than a scout scope.
a scoutscope gives you the same features of a ghostring, but is easier for a noob to sight in, and adjust. Makes accurate shooting at a distance easier
.
ever tried an XS small ghost ring @ 300 yards? Not Ideal outside of 100 yards let alone 300. (But most hunting is done well inside of this with a lever. I just shoot mine alot further because its fun :) )
Anyone who pooh pooh's a scout scope hasnt shot a scout setup... I guarantee that.

Each to their own. Whatever works for you, go with it. On my 1895 Marlin 45-70GS I went with a Leupold 1x4 Vari-XII, andf on my Marlin 444 I have a Bushnell 1.5x4.5 Scopechief VI. In addition, so I can utilize the iron sights should the need arise, I use Weaver pivot mounts.:)

There's a smokin good deal ($199) in SIR's latest flyer for Nikon 2x20 EER pistol/rifle scopes. They retail for over 4 bills. Would make an excellent scout scope IMO.

Scope on a BB Marlin

Leupold VX-II 2-7 x 28 mm (ultralight)

Fits perfect with a little less weight.

I find I have enough eye relief and use a Leupold Quick Detach base and ring setup just in case. The back sight has to fold down with the scope on and there is just barely enough rear sight with scope off due to the height of the base. I have to use a rubber bikini lens cover

The VX-III 1.5 x 5 by 20 mm is very sweet. Its a lot of great optics for a bush gun. ($$$$) Personally I really didn't like the looks of a tube vs a bell if that is of any relevance.

Scope vs open sights is personal perference. I had a chance this fall to try a red dot on a Marlin 450. At 100 yard I didn't like the way the dot covered the target and was burry. The owner was having touble hitting the paper and his buddy could hit the bulls eye 10/10 tries. Pick what your comfortable with.

Good luck:)

One of my favourite rifles happens to be a Remington Model 700 Stainless in 30-06 that I have modified to scout configuration. (Hence the Scout3006 handle)

I love this gun, as it is super fast, super handy and accurate as hell. (I nailed a fat porky at 300 yards once, as well as two deer under 50 yards.)

The only caveat I have with the scout configuration is that while it is very fast for target acquisition and an outstanding general purpose bush/field gun, the scope set-up does not lend itself to very low-light shooting (which happens to be when most game decides to show itself.)

Because the scope is so far from your eye, you lose the light transmission benefits of a regular eye relief scope, and glare becomes a huge concern. I have found that my rifle with the scout scope will poop-out around the same time as my iron sights, whereas a receiver mounted scope will continue to gather light and be usefull right up to the end of legal shooting time.

My scout rifle has been relegated to a "morning rifle" because of this. (Still love it, though.):D

I can't stand the look of the scout scope systems on rifles so I guess that you can figure out my thoughts.

Also if I am going to install a scope on a rifle I want to have the option to use more magnification which leaves out the scout scopes.

On my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 I mounted Warne 2 piece bases in the standard position on the reciever and then mount a 2X-7X Leupold Compact with Leupold quick dettachable scope mounts. If I don't want a scope on I remove it and install my XS Backup Ghost Ring sight.

I can routinely ring the 300 yard gong with my 2.5X scout scope on my 30-30
I dont find I need more magnification than this for the type of hunting I do with this gun... But it all comes down to what you like. I've had a 3-9 scopecheif on mine (Guide gun), a red dot, and have XS sights on my old 356, and have a scout scope on my 30-30. Personally I prefer the scout scope to em all on a lever...

Some day when I am damned near blind, I'll consider scoping a traditional lever gun. Until then, scoping a lever, is akin to painting it pink.

I don't feel the same way about scoping the modern ones like the BLR, the 99 Savage, or the 88 Win. The BLR in particular, looks almost better with a scope.

Looks aside, I don't like the change that a scope makes to the handling characteristics, or the weight of a flat sided carbine lever gun.

One mans opinion, or one opinionated man?
