Been wanting a Scout style rifle for some time. I am down to the Mossberg MVP or the Savage M11. I like the fact that the Mossberg takes different mags but have heard that this model has had some issues in the past. Will be used for hunting mostly but will be taking it to punch paper at the range regularly so accuracy is important. Comments, reviews and insults are welcome.

Nothing wrong with the Ruger. Have quite a few of their products and like them. Probably more of a cash thing this year as there will be lots of expenditures. Almost $600 more for the Ruger.

Ahh.

I was in the same boat and I saved money and patiently waited for a sale. I got the 16.1 Stainless/synthetic as it was the lightest and... stainless. I’m going to nitride it after break-in.

I rationalized the extra cost because it had what I liked: 3-position safety, control-round-feed with fixed ejector, and AICS pattern magazines.

IMHO Ruger has a winner.

Why a scout style though? I always wonder that when I see them... why would anyone like their optics mounted so far forward like on a scout rifle? Sure, a 10 round magazine is a plus, but the scope so far away just seems awkward. But, that's just my opinion... change my opinion with facts.

I always thought the forward mounted optic was goofy until I tried a 2.5x Leupold. I love it. Very fast acquisition and precision shooting with both eyes open

Here’s the facts... try it. Your opinion is obviously based on aesthetics. The 10 round mags aren’t all they are cracked up to be. I prefer the 5 round PMAG... the PMAGs actually work better than the factory polymer mags the gun came with.

I’m using the same scope on my GSR. My dad was like Riderfan at first and thought it was the dumbest thing he has ever seen. That was until he shouldered it.

Only thing I would change is the reticle on the Leupold. Needs a German #4.

i have a ruger scout. awsome bit of kit but didn't like the forward scope and went to a 2x7 luep scope in the conventional ruger rings. still a well balanced rifle. i have had two savage scouts and they don't compare to the ruger.

Love my Ruger, had a 2-7x32 scout scope on it but traded that for a conventional mount this season. Have to say I am happy with my choice as the areas I hunt require a bit more magnification and I was finding that the scout scope at 7x did not offer a wide enough field of view. Otherwise, it's a great balancing rifle, that is a bit hefty to carry for many hours over many hills as I do during the hunting season.
The Ruger polymer 5 round magazines are far superior to the 10 round metal ones that come stock with the rifle.

How do you guys find the short LOP on these scout rifles? No big deal for normal sized guys or a hit cramped?

The Ruger comes which spacers... sorry OP. I think this thread has turned into a “start saving and buy a Ruger GSR” thread.

I handled the other options: Savage, Mossberg, Ruger, and a Steyr. For me the Ruger was the best fit... although, the Steyr was cool and I liked it... the Ruger was $1000 less and you get AICS mags and a classic style Mauser action (I’m all about the CRF)

If you want to go on the cheap and get a quality rifle without detachable mags find a Remington 600.

The Mossberg has a shorter barrel than I'd like, as does the current Savage model, but if that doesn't bother you, you have more choices. Try to find examples of each that you can try for fit and feel, get the one that feels best to you. Apart from that, I'd tend to favour the Savages based on their models 10 or 11 because I'd like the muzzle blast a couple inches further away and that's not too long to make it unhandy for someone of my size. I'm not going to tell anyone who prefers the Ruger that it isn't better, I just wouldn't think it was enough better for me to pay the extra. (I've shot a Steyr Scout, it's as well made as a Steyr should be and it works as well as a Steyr or anything else costing that much should, but even more so than the Ruger the extra money is worth more to me than the extra nice in the gun.)

What is a decent range for those short scout barrels? Looking at a rifle in .308 with an 18 I barrel for deer hunting out west..
