Ok....let's have it....how much are you guys paying for scrap lead and where are you getting it ? If you're paying $25 or less for a bucket of wheel weights, I don't want to hear from you....you'll just make me jealous. :D Also, if you haven't bought in a long time, the prices have likely changed. Anybody bought anything from a scrap dealer lately ? I haven't bought a gram of lead in over a year now and I'm getting the itch to cast up another huge batch of slugs. I don't want to use my wheel weight ingots for this unless I can be assured of getting more.
 
Once in awhile I get a free pail of WW, and that's all I use,straight WW for my bullet's.
I keep some pure lead for trading for WW or casting up sinker's to trade for the WW.
I use the zink and any other suspicious material's for jig's and fishing lure's.
I load for the 45-70 and a 45 Win Mag.
Gonna try the 30 cal's soon.
 
I have had no luck getting wheel weights.
I have been using range scrap exclusively. I have been able to keep myself in lead by picking up the loose stuff behind the targets. I separate cast from jacketed and try to match the alloy to the application.
My club has no issue with people picking up lead as long as they are shooting it and not tearing down the butts.

It will be a sad day when I have to pay for lead.
 
I am not having any luck finding cheap lead. Going to see if I dig some up at my range.
Been melting down lead shot, got some 25 lb bags for $20 each.
Got 60lbs of lead of a friend for .80 per lbs.

Was looking at doing a group buy for pure lead but the best price I could find
was $1.30 per lb. Had to buy min 2000 lbs then add shipping cost.
 
speedjunkiesracing-I paid $47.00 plus tax for my last bag of # 9's. Might be better to sell your bagged shot at a fair price and look for wheelweights. Small sizes would be much more in demand for target shooting.

I'm stocking up on wheelweights- 26'er of CC for 5 gal buckets. Not much zinc yet but a few iron.
 
I havent paid for it yet. Hope I never have to. I suppose one of these days I should stock up a little more. I think Im down to around 40-50lbs left.
 
Most of the local tire shops in the lower mainland won't even sell it because they only deal with some local recycler. I wish they were more open to selling WW I've offered better than scrap price and no go.
 
Phone some of the larger roofing companies in your town.Most when they do a re-roof will use a neoprene flashing instead of the old pure lead one. If the guy's out there know that you would "pay for that lead with nice libation" they will go out of there way to make sure it comes to you on a regular basis.Also look for the discount tire shops that sell and mount used tires,they will always sell a pail of WW for some cash.Some of us are lucky,my wife is a assistant manager at a Wally world and I arranged to get all their wheel weights for a donation to the Children's Miracle Network.Get creative and source all the lead you can because sooner than later it will become harder to find than depleted uranium to make your rounds.
 
I went to a metal scrap yard here in Saskatoon, and picked up a sheet of pure lead used for some kind of roof flashing. Paid $1.00 / pound. Also checked with Habitat for Humanity - when they are given an older house to strip, that flashing ( around the chimney and sewer vent) is the same thing - pure lead. That was also cheap.
 
just curious to see if anyone has used old downrigger balls for casting bullets?
I have a couple 8 pounders with worn out or broken eyes and not sure what to do with them. I don't do any casting and, to be totally honest, know absolutely nothing about it.

Our welder had just checked into the price of scrap wheel weights for building some forklift counter weight extensions. "His" price was $1.25/lb for either scrap wheel weights or scrap lead sheeting. He was told the regular price to anyone else would be $1.75/lb. The spot price for new, pure, lead on Kitco's site is between $1.075 and $1.095 / lb
If they want $1.75/lb for contaminated scrap lead, they can shove it where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned. I'm not looking really hard for wheel weights right now since I'm just casting shotgun slugs for the time being. Although, if wheel weights present themselves at a decent price, I'll grab them. I'm going to start calling around to different places on Monday. What I don't want to do is wind up burning $100.00 in gas to save $50.00 .......the quest continues..... :)
 
Calling may be easier but I've had better luck in person. Especially if theres a 6 pack or a case of beer in my hand that is POTENTIALLY for the person Im talking to.

When its +30 outside and you're stuck inside swapping tires in heavy coveralls a case of beer goes a long way towards coming to a mutual agreement, lol. Definitely easier at smaller mom and pop shops though. I actually havent had any luck at any larger shops. I intend to keep trying tho.
 
Haven`t done any casting for some time, bought a large supply of sized and lubed bullets cheaper than i could do them myself. Guess i better hang on to my stash of lead, sitting on 150 lbs of ww ingots and 65 lbs of pure soft lead. I found much better things to do in the loading room than cast bullets, oh well as i get older i get lazyer. Don`t even use lead slugs in the black powder now. Small town garages is likely a better bet to make a deal on wheeel weights, used to pick them up localy for next to nothing. Pays to have relatives in the business.
 
I have had very little luck with tire shops, it seems they always have the wws saved for someone. I have had some good luck mining the berms at the range. It is better in the spring because all of the lead is sitting there after the snow goes.

I bring a small bucket and rake with me each time out and look for spent bullets. So far, since the spring I have made 20 or so large muffin ingots with range lead that I convert back into pistol bullets along with slugs and round balls.

Another idea if looking for pure lead is to check with the local dive shops and see if they have any old weights.

I paid $.75/Lb at a scrap yard for near pure lead then I got a job working there..I start on Tuesday:D
Now I will be able to buy more guns.:dancingbanana:
