Scratches on case necks have me concerned.

I bought some processed, once fired 223 brass from a fellow CGN'er today, but when we met I didn't have a look at them. Later, when I did have a look, I noticed the majority of the cases have these scratches/gouges in the necks. My worry is the necks will probably split along one of these lines, they are deep enough to catch a fingernail.
I don't know if I should even try one loading or not....

if they last for a second firing I'd be pretty surprised........they are not going to last long with a scrape that deep in them, and there is no way to iron that out......loadem, shootem, and let em hit the ground

they look like they have been fired in a military weapon with a fluted chamber. I have a h&k 91 that does the same thing to the casings.

Looks like dirty dies during the 'processing' - should still be okay - test fire a few to give yourself some confidence. The case mouth is the least brittle part of the case.

It's caused by brass building up in the dies.

I've also noticed it occurring with freshly annealed brass.

Load it and shoot.

They should still be safe to use, even if case life might be compromised. The worst that is likely to happen is a split neck. Load 'em up and shoot and consider it a bonus if they last more than one firing.

This ^.

But those are damaged brass and you should be asking the seller how that happened and maybe getting your money back. Might consider neutral feedback too. He sold you damaged goods, which is not the same as "used" or "once fired". Maybe he didn't notice but let him know so that he doesn't do the same to someone else down the road.

Ya. I will load some up and see what happens.
I talked to the seller and he said he didn't notice them, and it's on his personal brass as well. I don't know how you could miss those??
Anyway, he said he would refund my money if the necks split. He said his are marked too, and doesn't have a problem with them.
So we'll see what happens. They're all nice brass, Hornady and Winchester, so I hope I get some use out of them.

Don't think so. On cases fired in HKs the fluting is very consistent and around the entire neck. I've got several hundred HK fired cases and they don't look like this. On HK fired cases you can actually see the grooves where the flutes mark the neck. These aren't grooves, they're definitely random scratches. Could be a rough chamber on the gun but my guess is a dirty sizing die.

Definitely not a fluted chamber. Dirty or damaged sizing die. If you zoom in on the picture you can really see it's a scratch or gouge.
