stupid question time....is there a difference between regular screwdrivers and gunsmiths screwdrivers?

cheers,

Sean

The price. A regular inexpensive screw driver will do fine. You can grind them to a specific size if you need to do so.

If regular screwdrivers are used by regular guys.....

obviously gunsmiths use gunsmith screwdrivers....:D

As posted earlier any screwdriver can be ground to fit the slot correctly - that is the most important thing. Most of the screwdrivers I use are Sears, bought on sale 35 years ago and ground to fit the job, plus a bunch of "driver bits" that break quite easily.

Gunsmith screw driver sets, such as sold by Brownells, give a precise fit to the slot. Anytime there is not a precise fit, a slot gets buggered to some extent. Most people try to get by with regular screw drivers, then years after buggering screws, buy the right tool, and curse themselves for not doing it sooner.

Generally the best shape to use when fitting a screwdriver to a slotted screw is what is refered to as hollow ground. Brownells sells a stone for use in a drill press or hand drill or big die grinder, that is used for shaping their screwdrivers to the proper profile. All it is, is an aprox. 1 1/2" dia stone.

I like Chapman screwdriver sets. Very common in the States but I haven't seen them much in Canada.

:::edit::: found them at Newman Tools in Canada
