Pipe and Crescent style wrenches do not work for this. A barrel vise and a clamping style of action wrench are needed.

Well most single shots have an extractor. Well they did when I grew up. That generally requires an extractor slot cut into the barrel. Ssssoooo if you screw on the barrel and the action will not close, it is either to tight or to loose. Check the relation of the extractor to the cut. If it ends up with poor head space I would be inclined to say live with it. Most of those old guns do have excessive head space and its a low pressure cartridge so you probably won't hurt yourself. PROBABLY

YOUR 8x58 rolling block has square threads put it on and tighten it up.

Kudos for having the balls to take it apart to re-finish it. Speaking from experience, refinishing a rifle is a fulfilling project and terrible addiction. I refinished a Husky M98 just doing the cold blue method and look forward to trying out a rust blued finish. Time for another project I guess.

Make sure to take lots of photos as you go. They will not only help jog your memory about how things went together, but you can post as your project goes on and we can all see how it comes together (and pepper you with questions). I'm thinking about one of those TradeEx Rollers for a project of my own so I'd be curious to see how yours goes and to see what ideas I come up with for a project of my own.
