I've been shooting IPSC for a while now and I have felt very left out on 3gun matches because I have yet to purchase my first AR. (not that others didn't offer their rifles).

I have scrimped and saved and I believe I have enough to buy the one I think is the best. I am cheap but I am also a quality freak, and I plan on keeping this thing for ever ish.

I have landed on the LMT Defender CQB MRP model 16. I know from all I've read that this is one of the best Mil Spec Carbines available and it possesses all of the features I am looking for but before I dropped $2750 plus tax on it I though I would see what the experts (YOU) thought of it. Is it worth the cake? Can you get better for less, or am I overpaying buying through Questar? Think I could get them to throw in a few free mags?LOL

Pretty rifle, but $2700 for an AR...?

There isn't enough 3-gun activity going on 'round here to justify me blowing that kinda $$ on a rifle, but hey... It's your $$ :D

'Last new AR I put together (a 9mm) cost me $1100... That would leave you $800 for ammo.
 
That AR is awesome, no reason other than expense not to buy one, they are worth it though. If however opinions are being solicited; for that kind of money you could buy a host of other models from Questar or any number of vendors, KAC or other RAS units off the EE, stocks and optics and still have cash left over for mags and ammo.

The barrel is to long, the CQB should be with a 10.5" but I suppose you cant get one of those new now anyways. The rear LMT site is crap- its to big for it to tuck underneath any decent optic - so you would either have to change it or remove it if your using a scope.
 
While I'm certainly no expert, I like what I like....and I like the LMT setup very much.

The opinions mentioned above are correct, the LMT is great gear, but there are other options to be looked at.

However, if you feel that 'quality' is what you want and you have decided what that 'quality' is...then by all means pay what you can for it and don't regret the decision.

( maybe you will end up in buying some more after ;) )

For the sights, slap a Aimpoint and the rear buis is fine.
If you want optics, you will remove both of them anyways to put some folding ones, so it's a non-issue.

Be aware that they are a bit more heavy that short, regular plastic HG ones...
 
I agree with Sparrow. Great rifle but for the coin you can get something cheaper and a pile of ammo and mags. Then trick it out as you want/need to after seeing what it does and does not do for you.
 
I think I acquired all I need for my AR for around $1500 ish. $2700 is too high considering all the mags, ammo and accessories you need to go with it. PLus add some serious dough if you want the popular optics.
 
Lewis is good kit but there's equally good or better out there for a swak less. You'd be paying a premium for name when there's no difference downrange.

Strike that... 16" might be a little long for three gun but that's just opinion. You can practice a lot and score some righteous swag with coins that stay in your pocket...
 
LMT = high quality AR.
Great looking gun and I love the free float.
If you have another $1200 bucks you could buy an MR223.

Buy the one that makes you happy fella.


No one is going to pony up to buy you an alternate if you take someones advice and wind up with something you like second best.

Then, as other have said, get it out of the safe as often as possible and make the best of it.

Can't go wrong there...
 
I agree you could get a vanilla AR for much cheaper, but compare it to Production/Open.
I'd rather spend $3k on an AR than $3K on a race pistol...ymmv.

You can blow over 3K on SAN....so why not on a quality AR.

I have settled on LMT as my 'AR of choice'..
Current inventory includes 3 lowers..all Sopmod stocked.. plus 10.5" (X2), 14.5", 16" fixed front sight uppers, plus an MRP upper (10.5", 14.5" barrels) plus 12.5" MPR piston kit barrel!
A couple of observations, based on my personal experience.
Quality, reliability...it's all there.
MRP with the 16" barrel is quite a bit heavier than a standard 16" rifle...just have to do a side by side with mine and my Colt 6920....
If your intent is 3 gun, where quick transitions are the rule, you could make the MRP work, but only with a vertical foregrip out by the front sight...and a lot of practice!
I must admit, I prefer my MRP with the 10.5" barrel, but YRMV.
Haven't tried it with the 12.5" piston kit, and this might also work well.

As noted, at the end of the day, you can get by with less expensive options without a loss in reliability, accuracy, etc., but if this sport was all about cost, we'd all be shooting IPSC, including 3 gun, with nothing but Norc's!
