Scratches add character.

Exactly right, people who use their gear don't care about scratches.

Also anyone who buys an expensive optic and does not bother to use a torque driver when mounting it is special.

I only seem to mark up my brand new scopes soon after mounting then they rarely ever get another mark on them.

I learned to live with them. Nothing is perfect, and it's only cosmetic. If you're anal (and I am) a VERY fine point sharpie will help to blend them in... just don't go overboard with it.

I picked up a nicely scratched Nikon Prostaff and sprayed with "Truck bed liner" I got from Car-Quest.Turned out pretty good.
