sculling for waterfowl scull boat info

I live near a lake where for a couple months a year 1000s of geese raft up all plump with grain. Getting tired of trying to guess where to put the canoe layout blind to pass shoot em on the way in. Some days it is a slaughter some days they are 20 or 400 yards out of range. I have decided I am a candidate for a scull boat. Been doing some research and it is certainly a niche hunting technique. My plan is to build a sculling boat over the winter and am trying to piece together as much info and hull shape photos as possible. Does anyone out there have any experience with these boats? Any pics of the hulls?

If I lived in ontario I'd just buy one these from Bankes Boats but I think the shipping would be a bit steep. If anyone can provide insight on the design perameters for the hulls I'd be happy to share what ever I come up with design wise to build one with chines and plywood.

Hey Dragon fire thanks for that, I checked Gator Boats out but they don't do a sculling hulling. I appreciate the link though.

Might have enough to start making some paper models.

Re the screen alot do not seem to have allowance for it. I assumed all the effort that goes into making a boat with such a low profile would be for naught if a screen was used? I see pics of guys putting a few pieces of bush or ice on the deck for 'peeking' cover? I have zero experience with these boats and am keen to hear anything about em. Anyone out there ever hunt with one? Thanks

Not sure, but the few pictures of ones I've seen in old books all have a painted piece of plywood? with a small slit to see out off. I can't see how you're supposed to paddle up to them laying on your back/ with your head poking out.

You lay flat on your back with your head down (like perfectly flat on your back star gazing), the scull passes over your left shoulder and you reach across with your right arm and transcribe a figure 8 motion over you left shoulder (again I don't know jack but this is what I have gathered). No head poking out. The slit in the combing would be for a quick peek? In the pics I posted above you only got about 8-10 inches of boat sticking up above the waterline and 2 of those inches is comb! I don't think anyone would design anything so low if low was not a key component?

I strongly suspect that what we often see as canvas screens on these scull boats are for the upright rowing that is done to transport the boats. i.e to keep some of the water out of the boat.

Won't you need a punt gun as well?

Almost 30 years ago we tried that in a friend's uncle's prized boat. When we got back he was waiting at the shore and literally kicked and punched the 3 of us into a state of 'education'. Not a fan of corpral punishment but gotta admit we never did it again. Heck I can't even stand next to a trailered motor equipped duck boat without feeling nervous.
 
Meatsticks, I think you hit the bronze ring nail smack on the head. Great link I really appreciate it. Tisch has answered 90% of my questions. Looks like this project is a go. Basically I am feeling confident that a simple flat hull with a bit of rearward rocker will scull. Gonna put together the no fibreglass or epoxy poverty version over the winter. If it sculls well I'll post up my plans.
