Who has experience with the SD9VE? Is it decent enough to be an entry level range pistol? Something to bring along as a second pistol to offer an experienced shooting guest to use.
 
I had one for that exact purpose: A back up gun. It fit that purpose well, and was actually great for new and experienced shooters because it really made them focus on a proper trigger press.

I did the Apex spring kit and polymer trigger which helped, but it's still a very long trigger pull.

Pistol ran 100% for me. Not a single failure.

I probably would have used it more if I had more mags, but I didn't want to invest in a pistol I wasn't going to use much. Chicken and the egg I guess...
 
You get what you pay for... reliable pistol but the worst trigger I've ever used. Sold it pretty quick after, trigger made me a horrible shooter. If buying one, make sure you acquire the trigger kit first. When I had one, the magazines were very expensive for a cheap pistol and not available. Unsure if anything has changed.
 
The trigger is horrible, there was a thread on it recently. Even with the apex upgrade it was still marginal if memory serves me correctly. I shot one recently, had hoped it would be like my m&p but it was brutal. It looks nice, feels nice in the hand but I hated shooting it. I wouldn't buy one personally, better to take that money and buy a different gun or even ammo.
 
It works for what it was designed, a Self Defense gun. Now being in Canada we dont have the need to have such a type of specific gun, but instead we choose to use an intentionally heavy triggered SD type gun for general sporting purposes. An 8# pull is pretty heavy for any handgun but its nothing for an old revolver guy. Value wise, its excellent. Yes, mags are not readily available but they are out there. In fact the LGS here has quite a few for about $45 I think. I changed the trigger for giggles to see what difference it made(Apex claimed lowers significantly but I wanted to see for myself). I also changed the sights over to FO as my aging eyes react well to the glowing contrast of the FOs(same sights as the M&P). FYI, the trigger change resulted in a consistant 4# trigger pull but still has a very long reset. Accuracy-wise it is a great shooter. If you have limited experience and want something lighter on the trigger end, look at something else. However, if u learn how to use this gun it is a great trainer for future acquisitions, and a lot of fun in the meantime.

I just sold mine, my opinion is that it was a great gun for it designed purpose, the trigger on mine was stock but I did not mind it, 6.5 lbs but broke nice and reset was good. It shot all types of ammo, and sights were bang on. What I didn t like was the grip being alittle slick, and it was a ugly gun and I mean ugly to the point I just wanted to unload it, I got it on a trade and tried to like it.....but it is history.... bulls eye has ppx s for 500$, I would grab one before a sd9ve, yes I know some people think a ppx is ugly but I always liked the look of them...
 
As someone who has done a lot of double action revolver shooting, it's not that bad. If you can't maintain a sight picture while stroking the trigger your not gonna like it.

I would not recommend it for a first handgun, but if you can shoot it well, you will be able to shoot anything well.
 
I have both, haven't fired either yet , next week for range testing, but for feel and even looks, the ppx for sure. Only thing is the huge slide on the ppx, but just watch hikok45 video on them. Sadly my wife loves the look and feel of the ppx too so I lose! If you add in the trigger fix of the smith, then you are at the same price and the ppx comes with some nice kit! Ymmv!

Without touching the PPX, I guarantee it's a better pistol.

I'm used to DA/SA Sig triggers and that SD9ve was a real shocker... My 92FS and all my Sig's in DA have way better triggers with a clean break. My SD9's was stiff and spongy, another club guy shot it and said it was awful. I know when the SD9ve first came out, a month later there were a ton of them being unloaded on the EE. Be warned.

I bought a Sig SP2022 and it's an absolute dream for $500. Don't think you can find them now though. Best bang for the buck that I've experienced.
 
I had one for a stretch. Stock trigger is poor. Mushy. I installed the APEX kit and after filing it down for hours to work it was barely better. I sold it.

For the same price buy the PPX or even a Norinco NP34 if you can find one. My NP34 is dead nuts reliable and it's SOOOO much better than the S&W.
 
What are they going for now? If they're up to $500 I'd stay far away. The trigger is baaad. That said, I have one, and I'm keeping it, I got in when they were under $350 and for that price there was no going wrong. It's a great gun, except for the trigger.

BTW, where are you guys finding the trigger kits? I haven't found squat
 
I finally got to handle one at a store; feels good in the hand, tried the trigger heard bad things about it but have to say I didn't hate it! Its different than Glock or M&P; the pull is a longer but its not that heavy.
 
I bought one 6 months back, the trigger is just as bad as everyone says.
The biggest issue I find is that my bottom edge of my trigger finger starts to hurt after 100-200 rounds. Not sure if this is due to the bad trigger or the fact it's a metal side on a polymer frame and the recoil is traveling through the frame to my trigger finger.
I also have a Norinco 1911 45 and this is so much easier on the hand when shooting.
