Well I am having a hard time falling asleep tonight.

Saw my first gopher of the season today.

Realize that some fellas further west have been out a few times this season already but for we folks near the MB border mid March gopher sightings are exciting indeed

Sadly the rest of the week looks a fair bit cooler but I am looking forward to a fruitful season.

Havent seen one yet myself.

Just a question. Do you guys start shooting now, or do you wait till they have babies and then start shooting them? I know one field the farmer wanted them gone so I would blast them now, but other places I think I would wait till they gained in numbers since they a so few lately.

Though we always joke about "leaving a few for seed" I doubt that a weekend shooter could seriously effect a gopher population.

A farmer/rancher who was able to shoot daily can keep the numbers in check but even that would cost a lot in time.

Here in the south east the gopher numbers are just beginning to rebound, about 3-4 years ago there was abnormal rainfall and flooding that drowned them in their burrows. Water killed more in a few days than I will likely get in a lifetime but they come back.

I would go ahead and shoot them now, if you were to wipe them out the farmer would be so impressed I am sure he would pass along your name to others. As well as give you opportunities for game hunting on his land in the fall.

man kill every mother lovin one you can now!! Last year the were sparse in the spring but by mid/late summer I had lost $$$$ on my crop.
