Seagulls, why cant we hunt them?

i heard about seagulls being protected by international law.
why? those are flying rats, groundhog are more endangered than gulls...

in hay season you can almost walk on them.
would be good eating too!

I wish I could hunt them in the city where they wake up at 5am and start YYEAAAAWWWWKKKK YEEEEEAAWWWWKKKK IKE IKE IKE IKE IKE KKKKAKAKAKAKAKAKKAKA YEAAAAAWWWKKKK YWWEEAAAAKKKK. A nice suppressed .22 might give me back the sleep I've lost recently.
 
I believe that in the 1800's and early 1900's seagulls were hunted to near extinction for their feathers for beds, pillows etc. They were then protected by governments from several countries. They are also natures scavengers.

Indeed, they were once apparently scarce. I don't know where on earth you get the idea that a bird that feasts on garbage and rancid meat might be good eating though. Stick to grouse.
 
Like someone has eluded to, they are useful in the fact that they remove countless tonnes out of our landfills each year...they are like the guy with the big shovel following the elephants in the parade.
 
I believe you can't shoot seagulls because they are the queens bird. That's what I wad told not.sure.if. it is true. Like in sask Ur not.supposed to pick a tigerlily cuz its the.provinces flower and Alberta has the wildrose and so on and so on

I wouldn't eat a crow either, or a bear that lived anywhere near a garbage dump. And snails are delicious in a nice butter sauce. :evil:
 
One can not legally shoot them for the same reason One can not shoot legally shoot the Robin or any other number of song Birds...
There have been reports in the last few Migratory Bird Seasons of "New Hunters" shooting a few and taking them home.
If it where a life or death situation, I am sure they would taste pretty good, but till then I aint eating one.
If you have a hankering for wild bird, why not look up Black Bird Pie ;)

There used to be a mink farm here that had problems with seagulls, either the mink carcasses or the food I don't know, but there were literally tens of thousands of seagulls infesting that 10 acre farm yard. it was close to town, actually in the city limits i think, and the birds were a nuisance to the farm and also the entire city of Wetaskiwin.

The farm owners used to get a 1-day permit to shoot nuisance seagulls. 20-30 shotgunners would descend and all hell would break loose for half an hour or so and there would be hardly any seagulls around for another year.

That was 30-40 years ago. Times have changed.
 
I don't think they would be much of a challenging bird to hunt and possibly not good eating being that they are a scavenger bird......................maybe like eating a magpie.
 
time for the government to reconsider this species.
the problem with migratory bird is other country might not allow a change of law because its not a problem on their side of the fence.
