If a leather boot fits into your life Altberg is about all you need to know. The British and Europeans actually know what foot wear is. Its hard to imagine a bigger POS than Irish Setters or Danners.

My Irish Setter’s are going strong after 4-5 hunting seasons, for every complaint about them there’s a person that loves them. I’d buy a second pair of Elk Trackers in a higher insulated value in a heartbeat, I oil them twice a year and take care of them. The only real wear I’ve noticed is the laces on one boot are starting to wear but otherwise they are holding up great, super comfortable boots.

My feet got wet wearing Irish Setters, too many panels and stitching down the sides of the boots. I decided to go with Lowa tibets, no stitching down the side of the boots and also have a rubber rand around the boot. No place for moisture to seep in. Feet are now dry. No comparrising for the the wet coast. A friend of mine has an older pair of Irish Setters that he likes but I'll go with my own experience.

Redwing waterproof 2414, they have gore tex, are guaranteed waterproof for a year and are very comfortable. Lifetime laces. They have different levels of insulation (thinsulate) depending if you'll wear them in summer or winter
Routinely last 2+ years in the oil patch 6+ years at my current job.

I also recently purchased their new lightweight waterproof boot, which uses a composite toe. These have also been excellent for the few months I have had them, but not sure about durability.
Only caveat is the weight with a steel toe.

Agree with you that the wet on the coast is extreme, I have however been up to the knee in mud and water in my elk trackers and my feet were bone dry when I took them off. Same with spring bear hunting and being caught in a downpour, I periodically snow seal them and oil them regularly. Combine that with the goretex and the only time my feet are wet is if they get sweaty.

It could have been the model of boot that I had, the stitching came apart actually. Imo, I don't like boots that have stitching down the side of the boot to the sole. It creates a spot for moisture to seep in. The rubber rand around my tibets also helps in repelling water and also stops rocks from scuffing the side of the boot. Go with what works for you. I prefer Lowa, Miendle, Hanwag and Kenetrek style of boots. They all have the rubber rand around the boot and they're as waterproof as a leather boot can be. I use beeswax on my boots as well. These boots are expensive though. Sorry for the rant.

Nice to see real people this time around in regards to boots. A few years back mentioned I wore Irish setter eltrackers and danners and was told those are s***, elk trackers 200g have been good for me for the last 10 years, my son likes his danners allot. I have been early season hunting lately and bought vasque last year, a short boot but I really like them for how light they are for hiking, until it gets cold, then the elk trackers come out. Almost time for another pair of later season boots. Not sure which way to go this time around.

Cheers

So.

Ordered the boots. Unfortunately wasnt able to try them on due to COVID.

Got the boots.

The sizing is correct but unfortunately, with the way that the lower half of the boot is cut, I cant get my foot in the darned thing.

So....back to the drawing board!

Every 7-10 years I struggle to decide on a new pair of boots.

I hunt turkey in Southern Ontatio and Deer/Moose/Blackbear in Northern Ontatio.

So looking for something warm, waterproof, durable and that will last a while, as I absolutely hate shopping for them.

Anybody bought anything in the past year or so that they are really happy with and would reccomend?

Kennetrek.

I've been trying to break in a pair of altberg defenders for the last year and a half. I wear them for a full day of work every 2 weeks or so and they just will not break in. They fot just fine but my feet are sore after a full day in them. I still haven't worn them hunting. They are well built and very waterproof though.

I’m surprised at the negative views of Irish setters. I’ve had the Elk Trakkers for about 8 years now, they fit & feel G-R-E-A-T ++++
I spend a lot of time in icy/cold/muck & snow swamps & rocky slopes. NEVER an issue. Snow seal a couple times a year, not so much as a flys breath of water/leakage. I’d buy them again but they last a LONG TIME so no need.
