Search for the best camo layering system...

Merino wool is expensive but amazing. I got a polar fleece base layer and poly layer at CT and they work well. I will tell you the best secret I know as far as cold weather goes; go with wool socks and as many thin layers as possible. Air gets caught between the layers and insulates while weighing almost nothing. also if you are going to sit, walk in in as little clothing as possible then put it on when you get there so you don't sweat up your clothes. Last thing no cotton.

Sitka is overpriced and overhyped. I have a few items of theirs and seams, zippers, etc. have let go. You also need one size larger than normal,IMO. Their jackets are too short as well and it's cut in an athletic fit. You're paying a lot for the name and camo pattern, that's all.

The expensive Cabela's stuff is quality, forget the DryPlus, go with GoreTex. Their MT050 line is good.

Cabelas MT050 has been great but its rain gear and not meant to be worn all day. Sitka is unimpressive in person, and the prices are retarded. I am a fan of Under Armour gear, quite durable and the fit isn't entirely athletic or big and boxy. I also wear Riggs/Wrangler cargo pants as my walking pant, they hold up great and don't cost a ton. Hunting beats the sh*t out of clothing. Splurge on your cold weather and rain gear but stay reasonable on your everyday stuff as it will wear out/ get punctured and/or tear.

Columbia Monarch Pass wool coat, and the matching pants.

I've done all the technical gear, but found that even the best technology can't top wool. If you hunt when there is lots of rain, get a goretex shell to keep dry, but otherwise don't worry about it...wool is as warm wet as it is dry.

I agree Sask, on paper seems like an obvious choice. But the gear has to fit and from what i've read is that Kuiu gear has an atheletic fit. While my mind thinks i'm atheletic, my body says otherwise...

I'm 6.0' tall about 215 lbs and Kuiu fits me like a glove. I wear the xl jacket and a 34" pant. With the jacket I can wear all my layers under and still fit a puffy down jacket under it. I did make a mistake and ordered the rain pants to big but that's not I Kuiu problem.

Get some Goretex or Neoshell layers. Buy some cheap lightly brushed camo in whatever pattern you want from a surplus store and give it a light spray of DWR. Then wear the camo over whatever layer you need for the particular weather.

You can then use the Gore or Neo when you aren't hunting.

By far the best fitting and best performing stuff I have used is under armour.. ya I didn't beleieve it either lol.. Great fitting, tough, warm and dry.

A huge bit of advice... Whats most important for comfort/warmth is your base layer.. I forget what its called exactly but most places like cabelas, wholesale sports, marks work where house sell this stuff.. It bascially kind of looks like long underwear tops and bottoms, but its far better. I got my set from marks work where house.. coyote hunting in -35 didn't even touch me! exacept my face and hands lol..

On the subject of face and hands.. get a wool hat, mitts, belaclava for those really cold days..

x2 on under armour. It was a little pricey but it fits well. I started with a base layer and the bib. I ended up getting everything from boots to gloves after my first outing.

I look zoo good in it!! lol. Too bad no one can see me cuz its camo

Hard to go wrong with Merino Wool base layers. I also have a "Wooltimate" jacket and henley from Cabela's (sorry) that are absolutely excellent. Perfect stand alone for cool weather, and even better for layering when the wind chill gets up over -55!

to the OP.

i have Cabelas microtex pants and they me fit great. im 6.5 so i have to use the tall version.

so back to KUIU dont take the guide jacket as they re really in the athletic side.

on the other side :
i have to wear 3XL tall for jacket and the chugach in 2XL was a great fit with extra layer. cant comment for the pants.

Sitka is maybe overhype and overpriced and still working and not sure why Jason went for KUIU? maybe more in his direct pocket because today this is direct sale and i was guessing it cant be a little less expensive with no dealers but it s just me ...

Buy once, cry once. Go Sitka and be done.

Core top and bottoms
Traverse top and bottoms
90% pants
90% or Jetstream jacket
Kelvin or Kelvin Lite vest
Traverse beanie and gloves
Ascent pants

That coupled with rain gear will get you through some nasty weather. Also you can find very lightly used Sitka gear for cheap if you use google to find a particular Archery forum full of rich Americans that constantly sell used gear to "keep up with the joneses" ;)

Example- just paid 100$ shipped for mint optifade ascent pants. Bought some tan ascents last year for 45$ :). 100$ for a new Ascent 14 backpack, so on so forth.
