I have seen mention of this in a few threads on this forum that were about 5 years and 500 posts long and ive chosen to start a new thread because my question is specific and I didnt want it confused with other topics being discussed. Years ago I picked up a sporterized Carcano "sears" rifle at a gun show and proceeded to track down 6.5mm bullets form my local gun store and Graf 6.5mm Carcano brass from ebay, I proceeded to load the lightest loads I could having heard that these rifles had a repution for bad head spacing, (my assumption being that it was from bolts being swapped around at the sears factory, but thats not the debate here) sure enough my brass showed signs of head seperation. I thought I could fire form the brass to fit my chamber by only neck sizing it on the next reload, sure enough on my next trip to the range one of my casings catastrophically failed and I took the better part of it on my face, I was somewhat expecting it and wearing glasses so I was OK, but that day my Carcano got retired to the back of my gun cabinet to stay...... or so I thought. I have heard some referances to these guns being rebarreled into another 6.5mm cartridge, something slightly different, 6.5x54mm? im just guessing, if that was true I would think that could be causing the problem..... maybe. Can anyone give me some info on this? is it possible my brass is for an original military rifle and that this has been changed to something that was common back in the 50's? Anything to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.
