K,

Picked up a J.C. Higgins Model 60 Auto loader 12 Gauge

Very cool SHORT shotgun with a fully adjustable gas system.

Got it cheap because the gunstore was to lazy to clean it and thought it was broke

Does anyone have/know anything about these guns?...age?...quality?...value?

I couldn't find a J.C. higgins Model 60 in my gun parts catalogue, but fyi many J.C. Higgins shotguns were manufactured by High Standard.

"Short" and "Shotgun" should always go together.

MD is correct, your gun was made by High Standard for Sears. Manufactured from 1960 to 1974. The gun was made as the- Sears Model 60, Sears model 66, Western Auto 420, Westwern Auot 425, and High Standard Supermatic!

Well...who woulda guessed. Hi Standard is considered a pretty good make,no?

Umm...If anyone can give advice on how to strip the thing. I cant get the cocking handle/action bar off nor the recoil spring or piston. It doesnt look like the barrel comes out of the reciever neither. Any help appreciated as this thing needs a good scrubbin

Heres a pic

Looks like a fine upland gun. I hope you'll be posting a range report whenever you get it cleaned/fixed up.

I'll keep looking around for a manual for this thing....

Klunk, here you find more info:

It's exactly the gun I'm using for duck hunting right now. Well build and heavy. Pretty stock. I assume your barrel was cut down.
Easy to take down, actually. Unscrew the cap (forehand stock). There is another screw under with a big slot. Open this screw as well and watch out for the spring!!
Clean all parts with brake cleaner (Crappy tire) and apply oil. My shotty first didn't cycle , but now it's fun to shoot this classic shotgun. Highly underrated classic made by High Standard! They sell usually for about 200 in good condition. You can shoot steel with a modified choke.

Enjoy it

Yaa...Damn near cut my thumb off on the loading port. SHARP

Anyway...it seems to work good except...

When jacking a round into the chamber the next round in the tube seems to skip over the 'holding pawls' and completely hangs things up.

If ya load one up the spout and then fill the tube it fires just fine....only when manually racking the action does it double feed.

Soo....how does one get the cartridge pawls out??....never had to do that with a shotgun...looks fiddly

by the way...it kills beer cans nicely :D
