Ok I am making up some dummy round to get my 308 barrel throated out to match. I will be shooting some 155 lapuas and will be trying some 185 Juggernauts. Anyways at the moment I got some dummy rounds set at 2.360 in both the 185's and 155 lapuas . I am suing a Hornady comparator for the measurements. I also got some Sierra Match 155's and it looks like 2.350 is about as far out as I can seat them safely.

What do you all think ? Do you think this would be a good place to have the throat pushed out to ? What do you all set your 185's at?

Currently the a 155 touching the lands is about 2.205 which is very short.

single shot or magazine or some combination of both? all things being equal start at a .002 jump and work to jam.

also why multiple loads? seems easy to confuse what works well in your rifle. why not pick a bullet and stick to it?
 
Single shot F/TR rifle. Im not sure if its going to shoot the 185's yet and as it is the throat is to short to even try. Even with the 155's the bullet is too far in the case for my liking.
 
I would pick my barrel, and reamer specs to a given bullet, but that's just me. The 185 and the 155 are two different bullet designs, and it may be difficult to find common ground in terms of optimizing your specs to suit both. I would make up rounds to for your 1 selected bullet with a 0.010" jump to begin then you have enough leeway to go either way for fine tuning.

I agree with this.

The bullet lengths are considerably different between such a range. besides I have no idea why you'd want to shoot 155s if you are geared up for 185s.

I'd throat for the 185 with maybe .15 engagement into the neck and jump the 155s if you want to shoot them. (don't go less than .15" because you'll need some room to chase throat erosion.)

This is assuming you are not wanting to load magazine length rounds.
 
Given the OAL lengths you are suggesting you are not measuring to the tip of the bullet. Posting an OAL to an ogive is moot as there is so much error in how one measures and from bullet lots.

If you want both to work, seat the 185's so that the bearing surface at the boattail is at the base of the neck.

Use the same seater setting for the 155 see what you end up with. Adjust longer or shorter till there is enough bullet in the neck for both bullets. What sticks out the top is irrelevant in a single shot.

Start with 5 thou jump. you can always throat longer... shorter, not so easy.

Done.

PS I bet a M852 reamer will suit both bullets just fine.
 
Tourist: That is is damn close to what my dummy rounds are at . Mine are 3.015 and 2.975. The 155 lapua the bottom of the bullet is just about even with the bottom of the neck. The 185 is just barely bellow it. The bottom of bearing surface of both are about middle of the neck or a little less with the 155's. I think it will be a good starting point.
