Well, here's a new one one me. I sat down to load up some .308 trial loads for my Mossberg Patriot. I'm meticulous about trimming the cases to length and everything is within 2-3 thou. of spec so I set up my seating die and go to seat the bullet. It doesn't feel right since the ram handle doesn't go all the way down. I gave 'er a little push and "crunch", I pull the round out and it's crushed down at the neck. WTF? So I take out the die, take it apart, give it a good clean, and the same thing happens with bullet #2. Finally the light comes on and I set an empty case into the shell holder, back out the die, and start turning it down until it meets the neck. I had to unlock the collar and reset it and everything was fine after that. Have any of the rest of you had a die go out of setting for no reason? The locking collar was still nice an tight so I can't figure out how it ended up seating deeper than when I'd last used it. Not that it matters, but it's RCBS dies. I pulled the bullets and the charges, primed 2 cases and loaded replacement rounds.

Chances are you set up the die on a case that was undersize in the first place. Or that your press arm was not fully down - in my case I had this problem because my (portable) press had shifted on my work table, and the handle was hitting the edge of the table.

I'd say that either post #4 or #7 are reasonable causes.... or you're like me and have a mischievous 7 year old who likes to "help" in reloading room when dad is not around !
