second Gen Savage axis (30/06), light strikes (known issue to Savage arms)

Was Tween Digby and Yarmouth .....Escaped back hom
GF bought a new Savage axis this summer .
It has less than 100 rounds thru it (30/06)
Friday it did 2 fail to fire on Remington factory loaded ammo.

I looked at both and they were struck the same as the rest of the shells she had fired.

Stuck them in my Pattern of 1917 ...And both fired perfectly

Any tips on this problem before she calls Savage about it ?

It would suck if she had her first deer lined up and got a click....

Just my opinion but you are still not sure if this is a Rifle problem or an ammunition problem. Did she try firing them again in her rifle before you fired them in yours? If not then you may still not rule out the ammunition. I have had occurrences with different rifles and different factory ammo goes click on the first strike and bang on the second. Cleaning everything will not hurt anything, but try out another lot of ammunition.

The next round out of the same box of ammo went bang.
The primer was hit exactly the same as the rest of them

I dunno but a bran new rifle should hit hard enough to fire factory ammo on the first strike.
Between my son and I we have shot lots of this exact same ammo and Never had one go click
 
Possibly a headspace issue, the ejector pushes the case forward in the chamber and it might be too much for the firing pin to hit it properly.

Depending on what they say I may wash out the bolt with cleaner, But we have never oiled this thing.

With ~100 rounds through it, I would highly suggest cleaning the bolt.... If you haven't oiled it, then you likely haven't cleaned it either I suspect.....

Nope , We have not.
She takes better care of it than we do of the ones we have hunted with


Both of the axis gen 1 30/06 rifles my boy and I have.
Been hauled around hunting in a dusty truck for over 6 years.
Never disassembled , only lightly oiled the bolt from time to time with singer oil.

Both work flawlessly

I clean and maintain my rifle religiously....

It wouldn't hurt to start with a cleaning.... Who knows what kind of slag could be around the firing pin from the factory?
 
take the bolt apart, clean it, measure the firing pin protrusion .( compare protrusion with known properly working rifles ) .

deburr ( if needed ) and polish the bearing surfaces that the firing pin rides on .

clean with brake clean , then lightly lube with only graphite , reassemble .

I would also check the headspace , as it is very easy to adjust , and just as easy to knock out of whack if someone was playing with the barrel nut .

I take a go gauge , and put a 2 thou shim behind it and the bolt shouldn't close on this , but still close on the go gauge by itself .
 
If it worked flawlessly when the weather was milder and now starts to act up I would look for some heavy oil of some kind still in the pin track in the bolt, even tho it is what we consider mild for this time of yr in AB., it might be some leftover water soluble cutting oil left in it that is congealing somewhat.

I was thinking the same thing, sometimes the cold can gum up the firing pin, I've also heard if its cold enough, it can mess with the powder itself, though I've never experienced this. Its also possible, although rare to have some bad primers, even in factory ammo I've seen this happen. They don't go off the first time, but they do the second time.

Thank you to all who have made suggestions. I called savage arms today and the savage axis is known to have issues with the firing pin spring. They are sending me the parts needed to fix this.
The person I spoke to said the cold will not have any effect on how it strikes the ammo. They are made to fire in -50degree weather.
