Not to mention thousands of commie go*ks that got greased in Korea and Nam by the 30-06 slugs. That's the long and undisputed legacy of M1. G43 and SVT can all go eat M1's dust from behind.
 
well i think germany gets 1st, and 2nd, and on and post war guns fn49 over the SKS we just know sks because they are cheap and weapon of choice for the 3rd world commies and bannana republic millitia

just because america made the m1 means jack its funny how anything american in the eyes of a american is always the best! dont forget bud Canada,Australia,New Zealand,South Africa stood alnone against nazi germany with Great Britain for half the war before the yanks showed up
not to mention the 1st world war the yanks didnt show up till the last year of the war and they think they won it, did you learn in highschoole how Canadians burnt the old white house hehehehe,
i have been on exercise with american troops nice guys nothing personal but the quality of soldiering is something to be improved
it's a proven fact that germans feard Canadians on normandy the most out of all the allies german commanders picked straws to decide who would face the cannucks with our 303 bolt guns Canada may have a small army but a very capable one !

The M1 rifle was the BEST semi-automatic rifle of the War John is right. It was proven in both the Pacific and in Europe, as well as later in Korea.

I'd rather top off a magazine with a 8 round clip when it goes empty then top off a 10 round magazine with 5 round stripper clips on a semi-automatic rifle like what they did with the SVT-40 and the G43. I'm pretty sure all 3 rifles were shot till empty anyways, in battle I doubt anyone would be counting the ammuniton in their magazine when they have the enemy trying to get to their position.

Now as for the best rifle of the war, that would go to the Lee-Enfield No.4 instead, then the M1. :)

1) M1 Garand/Gewehr 43/SVT 40 all end up pretty equal to me at the end.
But on the other hand...

1) M1 Garand
2) Gewehr 43
3) SVT 40

??? Didn't the Brits have a Semi-Auto Rifle ???

I would take the Garand first if I had to choose one to fight WW2 with. You can't really count the ones that didn't see significant action. I would like to try a Johnson, but its limited usage makes it an iffy inclusion. The M1 carbine was well liked by those who carried them, but wasn't really considered a front line rifle. I don't think the G43 was used that extensively, but I think I would take it ahead of the SVT40. Although a AG42B doesn't make the cut, I had one, in good shape, but it wasn't that accurate, even if I had been able to get the right front sight to stop it shooting a foot high @100Yds.

The Johnson is pretty neat, great for a collection but I'm not convinced it would have been a decent service rifle.
One little dent in the fragile magazine of the Johnson and you're out of luck. That's pretty thin metal there and one hit with a rock while going to ground would be all it needs. I never rolled around in the dirt with mine, but I bet the recoil operated barrel could get jammed up with grime or sand where it contacts the vented part of the recieiver fairly easily. Kind of a pita to field strip, and the unprotected barrel seems a little fragile too. The US gov't made the right choice between the two if you ask me. (but then nobody ever does, like that stops me)
