Second thoughts on krylon

3M makes a textured matte clear coat. It's designed for steel stair treads and such for traction. I used this over krylon on a vanguard stock a few years ago, still going strong.

Interesting stuff thanks. I've only used Krylon matte clear coat spray.
 
I work at an AutoBody shop part-time and get the painter here to slap on a coat of high strength paint we use on bumpers and a matte clear coat. I've got thousands of colours to choose from and the stuff we use is excellent quality and I haven't had a single problem with it. Stop by a local AutoBody shop and ask if they'd do something like that and I'm sure they'd do a cash job for such a small part. I know we would. Especially in the winter when business gets slow for us, we take in just about anything..... Just my two cents on what to use in replacement of the old shaker can, plus the shaker can clear coat is junk, we rarely use it here.
 
I think of it like this. If my wood stocks were put through the rigor of the plastic stocks I have, I would have fire wood. So for the price of a can of Krylon, I can touch up the plastic over time or leave the battle scars present to remind me of how much I wore that stock during that sheep hunt, etc.

IMO, shining up a stock with some coating to protect the cool paint job is against the purpose of a hunting rifle. But a for a range toy...your mileage may vary.

I don't mind battle scars, but have a friend who spoke of major flaking within a few months, and then found more bad reviews online...but prep work is important, and he's not an attention to detail type of guy, so I'll be giving it a shot over the weekend and find out for myself....either way, it'll look better than the flamer stock
 
Be sure to do your prep well. Clean all oils off with methyl hydrate. I have yet to have krylon flake. Rub off yes... but flake no. Unless there is some wonder material in that plastic, it should stick. And if you are at all concerned, try a test patch and try ruffing, scuffing, peeling off after it has set for a day or two. And you can also try lightly scuffing with 200 grit to ensure adhesion. Good luck.

Yes, I think if it is flaking off for some people that would imply improper surface prep. The paint rubbing off here and there is no big deal as far as I am concerned.

Are those who painted their flamer stocks removing the orange first and getting down to the base plastic?

No, I just gave mine a light sanding, buffed the odd sharp edge with 4-0 steel wool, primed, painted, sprayed the webbing on ( that in itself was a half-assed job ) and clear-coated.
From priming on each stage got about 12 hours to dry and so far its standing up well.. fingers crossed ..
