Hi all,

I am looking for some advice on choosing my first 1911. I am thinking for my first 1911 I'd like to stay under $1000 and am considering the following: Ruger SR 1911, Remington R1 Enhanced, STI Spartan 5 and Kimber Custom II. Right now I've found a good deal on on the Ruger for $699 at Reliable, but the difference of a couple hundred bucks for something better is worth it to me if the others are significantly better.

I'd be interested in any feedback people might have on the choice, or if you think its better to keep saving up and break the 1 grand limit and maybe get a slightly higher priced STI, Kimber, Sig or something similar.

heres my 2 cents

STI: Spartans aren't made in US, they are made in Philippines under contract - I would look at Trojan which would be the best choice out of all you mentioned but at $1133 it is outside of your range.
Remington: Great gun but it is series 80, mostly matters on detail strip, good fit and finish.
SR1911: Series 70, stainless but a little on the loose side and missing some extra's that R1E ships with - given that I think they are about even.
Kimber: Its a nice name, everyone loves to say they have one but I rarely see these at the range and have never seen one in competition.

Already have the press, dies in .45, and a mold for casting. I made my first non .22 pistol a 9mm for the cheaper ammo, but then I got into bullet casting and reloading, so the cost difference is much less than store bought. My first 1000 rounds cost me less than $50 for powder and primers (lots of free range brass and wheel weights).

Ruger is a great choice - mine is well made and a great shooter. Also, you'll have some $$ left over to buy a reloading press.

x2. Although I have an STI Spartan (which I really like) I handled a Ruger SR1911 at the Mission range yesterday and was really impressed. The trigger, which the owner assured me was stock, was superb. Alas I didn't get to shoot it as the owner had driven out from Coquitlam... and left his magazines at home! (In retrospect I should have nipped home and brought him a couple of mine.)

A quality sub $1000 1911? Ruger SR1911 in a heartbeat but if you can find a SIG for under $1K, that would be my first choice. :)

Cabelas had the SIG 1911 XO model for under $900!! I was sooo tempted to pick up another one. I think they're sold out now.

I know it's not US made, but you'd be nuts not to look at Can Ammo's deal on a blued Norc 1911A1 and 1000 round ammo deal right now for a limited time for only $499.00 with free shipping on both gun and ammo!!

I have the Ruger and love it, the best out of the box gun I have ever bought. Good price as well. I have the Para GI expert which is now being sold. I have tried the Kimber and for the money Ill still keep my Ruger

If your going for .45 ACP you cannot go wrong with the STI Spartan ($7-800 ... contracted to a Philippine plant, but still STI quality - very tight gun) ... IMHO the only thing the Trojan has over the Spartan is a nicer finish which you pay an extra $4-500 for ... I've shot both and love my Spartan! Best 1911 bang for your buck!

How about a Springfield? They're as American as many STI pistols. Or a Colt's? If you aren't stuck on buying new, both can be had for reasonable money. Slightly used Springfield Mil Specs and GI's pop up on the ee once in a while, this one just arrived today in fact.
