Good afternoon all,

I have been asked to try to get any information about the attached S&W revolver. There are no markings on it except for what is pictured on the top of the barrel, and a 6 digit serial number under the butt. (starts with what appears to be : 317###). No calibre information anywhere.

appears to be 30 calibre although 38, 32 and 380 rounds don't seem to fit.

I need some experts to weigh in.... all information appreciated :)

Cool revolver, but it's been rolling around in someone's truck too long. That finish is going to cost an arm and a leg to bring back.

If caliber is 32 S&W it's a Top Break 32 No. 1 1/2 Double Action Model 4. If it's 38 S&W it's a Top Break 38 No. 2 Double Action Model 3. It's been a while since I've held either revolver in hand but I seem to recall the 38 S&W version having a shorter cylinder axis pin housing under the barrel than the 32 S&W model. Based on the pictures you posted the housing looks to be the shorter version which makes me think it's the No.2 Model 3 in 38 S&W but that's just my best guess from what I can see.

If you have any .38 or .32 caliber cartridges you can try inserting the bullet in the muzzle end of the barrel and you'll easily be able to tell if you have the right diameter. Either it'll fall in, not even remotely fit, or it'll fit just right.

although the year qualified it, there was some issues with the status based on potential calibre, and barrel length.... It was submitted this AM to police for destruction.
