Gday from south Eastern Australia ,
im currently enjoying nice 10 degree c days in the sun once the fog clears, big frosts though keeping me on my toes.
now however, in my winter time i am becoming 'old school' , i just built a "hut", old school as you would like and "as rough as guts" but boy o boy will it keep me dry and warm thoughout winter.... il tell ya :)

anyway that leads me to the Question, I want to produce a little thing or two in form of Wooden chair,,, an add some Deer hide/ Fur.. a nice spotty Fallow, or a Brown coarser Sambar.... some old school ties with the way the hide is hand sewn together perhaps, whatever , That is for me to worry about.

What I am however chasing is some old timers with some ol time info on Brain Tannin hides in the name of savin a few dollars an cashin in a few peaceful an quite man hours in the Hut..............

I wanna know , everything and Can I do it? tanning 'elk' sized animals!
let me have it!

Thank you!

Every animal on the planet has enough brains to tan it's own hide. Lots of info on YouTube about this to learn from.

yeh that is a common 'saying' which ive been hearing alot of lately via all the youtube vids iv seen.

i dont mind watchin youtube stuff, but i love talking to people who actually do Sh!t................. sometimes you can learn off someones personal experience, because you may of heard, Theres many ways to Skin a cat..... ;)

If you want to do a bunch of hides it’s worth it if you just want to do one don’t bother.

1) take hide nail it to plywood with washers use presser washer to clean off fat this works better then strapping it off you want it done before Christmas I always go industrial not old school. I like the easy way.

Use brain mix cure, many ways to do it pick one.

Now you have to work the hide use a old front load dryer with the heat off put round wood blocks in it to tumble, do this for hours until hide is soft.

Even the Indians avoided working with Elk and Moose hides if they could get Whitetail or Mule deer hides.

You are asking a question and you have already answered it twice to your satisfaction. Why don't you just post your results?

hm quite coarse and take alot of time to soak up the tan?

yeh looking forward to tryin, the pressure washer sounds like short work to the methods seen on youtube ;)

im going to try this out soon and post up results, it is goin on the back burner after that one off piece though because looks like i might be heading toward wild venison harvest status soon, which would see hides loaded onto utes in form of gutted full animals! interesting, an hopefully a exciting venture with a little bit of income for my troubles!
thats for another day though, may know more soon!

I'm not too sure on the state of tanning your hide Down Under, but are there any trapping or hide preparing companies down your way? We have an outfit or two, Halfords is one of them , I believe, and they will sell hide tanning solutions. I don't think that they sell brain tanning kits, just regular tanning kits.

If you have trees with high "tannin" content in the bark, you might be able to tan your own hide in this manner.

Whatever you do, don't use wood ash to clean the hide. It has a high Lye content that will make the hair fall out. Found out that trick from an old timer who put wood ashes on his cows back's to keep flies off them in the summer. Lo and behold, when it rained he had a herd full of bareback cows! Used that trick when I was a kid to get the hair off a hide to make rawhide for "projects"

I just tried with a Raccoon - the hide is currently drying in my basement (nice and cool down there). From what I learned, you can use salt for hide only curing, or refrigeration for fur bearing skin (the fur would be worthless if you salt-cure).

Hey fellas, i am also currently just drying my first piece , test piece!
next will be a full hind, possibly with a tanning solution lol. the brains is cool but a bit full on :D if i want to do heaps, i dont think i want to play in brains so often... see what happens

I'm not an old-timer but my father was a mix of Scottish, Innu and inuit from Eastern Canada Labrador specifically and he taught me a few things if you have any questions just ask I can try to answer them if I can answer them I'll research it and I'll send it to you
