I'm looking for opinions based on experience please. I need to source some new bottom metal, mag springs, followers and mag boxes for a few upcoming SA SS Rem 700 projects. Stainless is strongly preferred.

Where are you guys buying such things and which brands give the best bang for the money? How much? Any issues shipping from US suppliers?

Some will recommend ptg - but I won't. :)

Williams did make some in stainless, but for some reason I think they quit the stainless 700 version.

I will...

I have PTG bottom metal on three rifles and it is a nice product... fit and finish are excellent, mine are all blued steel, I have not tried the stainless. PTG will ship directly to Canada.

I know DG had problems with a PT&G bottom metal assy but I have 5 or 6 of them and all mine are of the highest quality and work flawlessly. I can and do recommend them, and if you do get a dud return it and they will replace it........
Like SC, I have never had an issue with factory Remington bottom metal and I have owned likely upwards of a hundred of them over the years. Some having over 10,000 rounds through them and I have never had one pop open or give me grief in any way. I use PT&G for my working 375 H&H (THE TRUE KING) because I wanted to add weight to the rifle and I like the Oberndorf style floorplate that straddles the guard bow. I also use them when I lengthen 700 actions because they cover up the longer opening for the magazine better.

What's wrong with factory bottoms?

There are zillions out there. The price is right, low in weight and reported problems are very few. I've never had a problem with one.

Absolutely nothing wrong with factory, I've never really had any major issues with them either. In fact, there wasn't anything wrong with any of the factory barrels I've replaced over the years either... I replaced them because I wanted to...same reason why I started this thread

This was not the case for me - the reason I can't recommend their product. From their website:

"all sales on PTG Bottom Metal are final, absolutely no returns."

I bought a Williams for my Rem. 700. Very well made, and fit perfectly. Huge step up from the original Remington version! Much easier to reassemble after cleaning as the magazine fits a lot better into it. They shipped direct to me here in Canada.

I've seen a couple originals hanging on the wall of a gunsmith's shop, bent in the middle, basically pot metal junk, IMHO. Care must be taken when reassembling the original version to make sure the magazine is sitting inside the bottom metal properly or it will bind, putting pressure on the action, and thus screwing up accuracy. When properly installed, the magazine should be able to move up and down about 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch. If not, it's binding.
