I just slapped an North Eastern Arms upper handguard rail on my VZ-58, and am looking for a red dot or reflex that can handle temperatures at least -20 and below.

The Holosun HS403 looks like a good balance between price and quality but only functions to -10 according to the manufacturer. Is this a common problem across all battery-operated sights?
Not a dealbreaker if this is the case. The VZ's irons aren't bad past 100m, so I don't mind sticking to irons when the snow's really flyin'.

Battery life will always be shortened in the cold but given your demographic I don't think that's news to you. The Trijicon RMR dual illuminated doesn't use batteries, tritium and fiber optics provide illumination.

Yeah, cell phone batteries can go in a matter of an hour or two if not kept in a chest pocket during the winter.

The RMR is a really attractive option, though at that price I might have to go with the tried and true arctic warfare system, a Mosin-Nagant M44 and as much 54r that I can reasonably get shipped up.:d

I have found a good post from another gun forum where an LEO from Alaska comments that he has personally used Eotechs in cold weather and has seen Aimpoints work fine. Another poster said that he has used an Eotech with no ill results in -50F. The general consensus seems to be that since red dots are such low-draw devices, the cold doesn't affect battery drain on a day-to-day basis. That being said, it would probably be safe to change the battery once a season just in case.

Obviously solid iron sights are important. It seems as if in this case absolute cowitness might actually be a bad thing; if the red dot fogs up, it could obstruct use of the irons as well.
