Has anyone gone on a self guided bird hunting trip in Saskatchewan for upland birds. What I mean is basically going on a bit of a road trip from farm to farm and asking permission to hunt. I know that outfitters and guides know all the good spots and have access to them but I find their costs pretty high and mostly catering to Americans. I was hoping to save myself some money and go out on my own adventure, fly out, rent a car and see what I can come up with. Anyone from the area with any suggestions pro or con.

You will pay more for your rental car and gas and have less success your way, I would guess. You are going to be spending an awful lot of time driving around, looking for spots that 'look' good, then trying to track down the farmer, only to find there are few birds in that spot you chose. Start all over again.

Try to do the homework beforehand. See if you can contact a local F&G assoc'n and see if they'd be willing to have some guys help you out. You're from out of province so there's no real risk you're going to hunt out their favourite spots. But a few guys might be willing to have somebody tag along. Get property ownership maps and make the phone calls from Ontario. Line up as many fields as you can so you've got as much choice as you can. Ask the farmers about the bird populations as they will know. Although I doubt any farmers will demand payment to hunt, some sort of a gift would be a mandatory gesture on your part (bottle of rye?). Good luck.
